Though many gaming fans will decry it, we all secretly love showcase season.

The summer brings with it a wealth of events that set the stage for the next year and beyond in the gaming sphere, with some of the biggest developers and publishers revealing the biggest games on their way.

The last few years have seen many of them go entirely digital as a result of the pandemic, and while it wasn't perfect, it still got the job done, and we got some tidy reveals in the process.

But now, one of the biggest gaming events has canned its presentation. And it could cost it its entire reputation.

E3 2022 Is Officially Cancelled

For the first time since the conferences began, it has been revealed that E3's planned digital event for 2022 has been completely cancelled. Initially, it was set to return to real-life presentations, but it was revealed in January that it'd be going digital once again.

The news was revealed by Razer PR, Will Powers, on Twitter, who announced that he'd got an email stating that the show would not be going ahead.

Supposedly the conference is planned to go ahead once again in 2023, but missing a year for the first time in its life is a big step that could make a comeback pretty tough.

This is pretty brutal news for the conference, and we're hoping it can recuperate by next year - but there's every chance it could be overtaken.

Geoff Keighley Gets Cheeky After E3 Cancellation

Right as the news about E3 broke, Geoff Keighley stepped up to the plate to announce on Twitter that, coincidentally, Summer Game Fest has been confirmed to be making a return in June 2022. They're set to be "producing another Kickoff Live show with announcements, news and first looks," and seemingly, trying to slide in where E3 has left.

This is a big opportunity for SGF to truly overtake E3, and with Geoff Keighley's massive pull in the gaming industry right now, there's a very real possibility that it could in the legendary conference's absence. It all remains to be seen, but for now - it looks like E3 is taking a sabbatical. We just hope it's got a reputation to come back to.
