While the original Dark Souls board game may have leaned a little too far into the video game's punishing difficulty thanks to a campaign that felt too tough, Steamforged Games is back again for a third crack at FromSoft's dark and foreboding action game.

Following on from its role-playing game in 2022, the developer is heading to Lordran for its next adventure - and it wants you to bring your friends.

Board game Dark Souls 'The Sunless City' revealed

This third go with the Dark Souls franchise is doing things a little differently by introducing co-op for up to three players.

The Sunless City will focus on the first Dark Souls game, bringing intrepid adventurers to Lordran, where they'll encounter classic bosses like Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough. At least you can't break your controller this time.

If you already own the original Dark Souls board game, you can take advantage of backward compatibility to carry previous bosses into The Sunless City.

As far as what's in the box, you'll find 15 miniatures, character boards, almost 200 cards, 15 custom dice, health dials, and more.

"Dark Souls has been a key IP for Steamforged, so to finally bring DARK SOULS: The Board Game - The Sunless City to the community is genuinely thrilling for the entire team," Mat Hart, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at Steamforged Games said.

"We thoroughly enjoy creating games in this universe and it’s really been a part of our history for many years now."

As always, our goal as creators is to capture the magic of the original video game. Players must be cautious with resources, willing to learn from mistakes, and, of course, prepared to die. Having played the game ourselves countless times during design and playtesting, we can’t wait to see how fans embrace this new edition."

Haven't we seen this before?

Back during the original campaign for Dark Souls: The Board Game, Steamforged released a 32-page rulebook called 'The Sunless City' - and its big draw was, you guessed it, classic locales, the likes of Ornstein and Smough, and a co-op campaign.

That's led to some questions as to whether this new boxed product is offering the same experience. We've reached out to Steamforged Games and will update this post. You can pre-order the Dark Souls board game 'The Sunless City' now, for $109.99/£109.99.
