The cup is sadly empty, as Studio MDHR confirms this is the end of the road for Cuphead. For nearly a decade, the developer has been working on the adorable run and gun shooter and made a name for itself. The clue was in the name thanks to the release of The Delicious Last Course DLC, but this really is the end of Cuphead.

If you haven't played Cuphead, you take on the role of either the titular character or his brother, Mugman. The Delicious Last Course adds Ms. Chalice to the mix, as this trio sets sail to DLC Island to defeat new bosses and collect ingredients to help Chef Saltbaker. Although we could come up with a million new levels, Studio MDHR is bowing out of the Cuphead game.

Don't expect a Cuphead sequel

The Delicious Last Course might be it for all things Cuphead, but speaking to IGN, Executive Producer Maja Moldenhauer has teased what's next. Although she's not ready to reveal what Studio MDHR is working on next, she said, "The sky is the limit We have a lot of ideas in our head in terms of where we want to go, what we want to do. I will say that we love 2D animation. We love pencil to paper, but beyond that, it can go anywhere."

Confirming that The Delicious Course was made up of ideas that didn't make it into the main game, Moldenhauer said "we got it all in" and that there's nothing left on the board. Although she's remaining tight-lipped on whether Cuphead, Mugman, and Ms. Chalice could return further down the line, it doesn't sound like we'll be sipping from Cuphead 2 anytime soon. Oh well, let's check back in another decade.

Now that The Delicious Last Course has gone gold, it's full-steam ahead for its release on June 30. We saw plenty of the game at Summer Game Fest 2022 and got a glimpse of a new boss who can turn into a living snowflake. It's all typically Cuphead, and exactly what we've come to expect since the game was first released in 2017. Good job Cuphead is notoriously difficult because you'll want to make the most of it.

Beyond the game, we've got Netflix's animated series that debuted in February. Although the general storyline is remixed from the games, The Cuphead Show! captures the aesthetic of the game and was a big hit for the streaming service. We've already got confirmation of more episodes - which are due to land on August 19. The more seasons of The Cuphead Show! we have and the more the fan base grows, the more likely we are to get Cuphead 2.

Elsewhere, you might've spotted Cuphead in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii costume. Speaking to Fanbyte, Moldenhauer said she'd love to see the characters appear in more games but admitted she doesn't know what other titles would fit with the feel of Cuphead when she added, "We already have so many ideas of our own to implement, I can’t think about integrating something else." Cuphead and Ms. Chalice in Mortal Kombat 12 might be a bit of a stretch, but MultiVersus... maybe?
