Counter-Strike 2 axes support for Mac players

Counter-Strike has made the tough decision to cut off players on macOS - and if you want a refund for the game, you'd be lucky.

Gaming on Mac has never really been it. There are a few titles that Apple users can get behind, like Apple's Arcade offering Resident Evil Village or Steam being able to extend the likes of Civilisation VI and DOTA 2 to those on hardware that doesn't exactly prioritise gaming - but it ends there.

Some great drama comes in the form of a series leaving macOS players behind, allowing gamers on other platforms the same access they always had. It looks like one of Valve's primary properties right now is saying farewell to Apple users for good.

Counter-Strike 2 has left macOS behind for good

Bummer. It appears that Counter-Strike 2 isn't messing about with anything that isn't its absolute priority, as the game has officially fobbed off Mac users who are no longer allowed to play the game after moving on from CS:GO.

"As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems," says Valve in a new Steam Support statement. "Similarly, we will no longer support macOS."

Explaining why Mac players have been banished into the realms of obsolete gaming, Valve added, "Combined, these represented less than one percent of active CS:GO players. Moving forward, Counter-Strike 2 will exclusively support 64-bit Windows and Linux."

Mac's refund system for CS2 is needlessly complicated

Even worse for players, there could be a slim chance that those who have purchased Prime Status to play the game on Mac might not get their refund.

"macOS users are eligible for a refund if most of their CS:GO playtime was on macOS and they played CS:GO on a Mac between the announcement of the Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test (March 22, 2023) and the launch of Counter-Strike 2 (September 27, 2023), regardless of when they purchased their Prime Status Upgrade," says the same post.

This means that you have to have touched on both CS:GO and CS2 to actually get your refund. The refunds will be offered until December 1 2023, so here's hoping you meet the minimum requirements to actually get your money back.
