Although Call of Duty appears to be healing somewhat, with Microsoft's pending acquisition already reaping its rewards, it seems like Xbox might not be getting the full package it bargained for.

As a franchise, Call of Duty attracts usual figures of higher than one-hundred-million players, which was pivotal in the valuation of Activision hitting the $69 billion mark. But, Call of Duty's player count is dropping, and millions of players are leaving the series behind.

Call of Duty’s player count continues to fall

With numbers having plummeted in Call of Duty throughout the first quarter of the year, amid Warzone's issues and MW2 Ranked cheaters, Activision has pulled out a few stops to try and stabilise the sinking ship.

However, the addition of Vondel and other crossovers has not plugged the flood of Call of Duty players leaving the franchise behind and nudging it toward the Gulag.

As of the Activision quarterly financial report, Call of Duty has lost another six million players (approximately), bringing the total down to around 92 million worldwide.

Call of Duty's player count worsens despite growth in CoD Mobile

At this stage of the year, it is quite common to see a dip in Call of Duty players who have grown tired of the same game and are waiting for the announcement of the next annual release.

What's maybe more striking is that while Call of Duty is going through its natural arc in between releases, CoD Mobile is growing and overtaking console. This is great for the mobile fans but only adds more woes to the console community, which must be dropping off more than we think.

With Warzone mobile on the horizon, the importance of CoD: Mobile should not be understated, and maybe Sledgehammer Games' positive leaks for Modern Warfare 3 can kickstart the multiplayer resurgence once again.
