Black Ops Battlefield

It used to be a case of either being in Camp Call of Duty or Camp Battlefield. The arcade shooter and the realism simulator were always avid competitors, but after four rounds of being battered and bruised, Battlefield has turned into the gene's punching bag.

Still, there could be a good product in there somewhere, as EA is heading back to the trenches and the deep-rooted mud to bring the series back to its champion status. A new Battlefield game is officially in the works, and EA has bold claims that it will usurp CoD.

EA claim new Battlefield game could outsell Call of Duty

In an interview with IGN, EA revealed that a new Battlefield game has entered full development and that it will be much closer to the games of old, albeit with modern-day glow-ups.

EA Studios Organization Vince Zampella claimed that the game will be much more like Battlefield 3 and 4 - the "peak and pinnacle" of the series - and will be stripping back some of 2042's failures like Specialists and 128-player lobbies.

With EA dubbing this as "the most ambitious project" in their game development history, Zampella has now bet big on Battlefield to contend with its biggest rival once again and even outsell Call of Duty.

"The best Battlefields have outsold some Call of Duty's and the other way around, back and forth. So I think absolutely it can."

"Is that what we're going for? I mean, not directly, but always. We're not looking to take down Call of Duty. We're making something that's different and we're making something that's us. But yeah, it definitely has the possibility."

If the next Battlefield launches in 2025, it will be competing with Black Ops 6 to start with (which has already been Call of Duty's most successful Beta ever), and a possible second Treyarch title based on its own glory days.

Call of Duty fans laugh off Battlefield rivalry

In IGN's article, journalist Kat Bailey pointed out that even the worst-performing Call of Duty games have outsold new Battlefield games, using Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 as a case study from 2016. Fans have continued this mockery of EA's ambitions on social media.

"Battlefield has never and will never outsell Call of Duty," one gamer said on X. "They haven’t made a good campaign in forever and they don’t have a 3rd mode. On top of that they chalked PS4 and Xbox One already."

A second sceptic added, "I respect his confidence but there will never be a time in this world where Battlefield outsells Call of Duty." An abundance of like-minded comments appeared on threads which circulated the news.

However - and this is a big however - Zampella has spearheaded some of the biggest multiplayer FPS games ever, with CoD's own Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on his portfolio alongside Titanfall and Apex Legends.

As Zampella also skipped out on the maligned Battlefield 2042, there's already promise in this untitled Battlefield project. Could the next outing really be the one to pummel CoD and silence the haters? Hopefully, we won't have to wait long to find out.
