Fortnite has always had it hard, comparing this apple to the orange that is Call of Duty. Still, there's no denying that Fortnite's diversification from the core battle royale experience is a case study that should be learned.

The title moved on from a quirky cartoon shooter with the expansion of Creative Mode and the Unreal Engine 5 update that allowed for entire universes to be built with custom tools. This has kept the player count high and steady for years, almost like the modding community has done for titles gone by like Skyrim.

Now, Call of Duty appears to be taking notes, as reports claim that Infinity Ward and Treyarch are joining forces and combining their efforts to release a custom map creator tool for future games.

Call of Duty studios reportedly working on a custom map creator

As per the leaker "BobNetworkUk", whose reports this week have included updates on Verdansk's delays and the notion that Modern Warfare 4 could be in serious danger, Treyarch and Infinity Ward's Poland studio have been working together to create a custom map tool.

The tool would likely allow fans to build their own maps, and it comes off the back of Activision releasing data on how Caldera was made.

Originally, Activision's shared data sparked interest in custom Warzone POIs, akin to how Fortnite made The Block, but the new report suggests that fans will be able to create their own multiplayer maps.

Bob couldn't verify whether this creative map tool is intended for Black Ops 6 or a different Call of Duty game. Custom maps have proved incredibly popular in Fortnite, and bringing the concept over to Call of Duty would be a recipe for success.

This news has faced backlash, though, as a mod has become the subject of mass outrage. It was only recently that Activision issued a cease and desist letter to the owners of the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer remastered mod that was due to release this weekend.
