Some Call of Duty players are unhappy with how the tone of the game has shifted since it was first released.
The game has definitely gone from being a more serious title to something a bit looser with an additional focus on pop culture, but the change may not actually be as big as it may seem to some people.
Some players think the tone of Call of Duty has changed for the worse
Reddit user Lazy-Vulture shared a post in the gaming subreddit about how they find the current tone of Call of Duty to be disgraceful.
They wrote: “Opinion: The change of tone in Call of Duty was a disgrace” alongside a meme stating that the game has gone from being dedicated to veterans to joking about Nicki Minaj.
Some commenters agreed, stating: “Blame consumers. The modern Warfare reboots started with a serious tone but they inevitably get filled to the brim with pop culture characters and anime guns because it’s simply more profitable for Activision to do so.
“At the end of the day it’s always a numbers game and the numbers don’t lie.”
Another commenter suggested having two separate COD releases to cater to the Fortnite-centric, goofy market and the serious market at the same time.
They said: “They should have alternated from a serious COD one year, to a goofy silly COD the next year.
“That way they are catering to both markets, but should make a clear effort to distinguish the serious ones as being serious, and the silly ones as being silly and they shouldn’t merge.”
Not everyone feels that the game has lost touch with its roots
Despite several people expressing that they felt the game had gone from being a serious game to something much more pop culture focussed, many people were quick to point out that the game hasn’t changed all that much, particularly in recent years.
“Call of Duty was never that serious, be real.” wrote one Reddit user.
Another added: “Wtf is this post? This feels like it was lifted straight off 9gag in 2010 lol. COD was never about "honouring the veterans" lmao.”
One topic that many players were quick to bring up is how it was hard to treat the game seriously when it was so common to get harassed in the voice chat, and jokes about 360-no-scopes and teabagging were commonplace.
While Call of Duty does do some work for veterans, with the Call of Duty Endowment working to help veterans find careers, for example.
However, the notion that the war game was in honour of veterans to begin with is a bit misled, particularly in regard to the multiplayer aspects which appear to be what the original post is referring to.
Though the game has changed (let's be honest, Nicki Minaj was never going to make it into Call of Duty 2003) it isn’t necessarily for the worse.
Given the popularity of games like Fortnite and Apex Legends, it makes sense for Activision to add some new, more energetic elements to the game.
