You'd think that with a new Call of Duty on the horizon, a refreshed Warzone experience to come with it, and a World War II shooter to maintain, the franchise might be done with its 2020 release. Black Ops Cold War was fun for the most part, bringing an arcadey quality back to the multiplayer shoot-em-up gameplay of the series.
Although Cold War might not be remembered as the best the franchise had to offer, it certainly gave fans something to do for the year it was active, and championed by Call of Duty itself. One might expect that the release of Vanguard would leave it buried - but Treyarch clearly has different ideas.
Black Ops Cold War Is Getting A New Update
In a surprise announcement, it looks like Black Ops Cold War is getting a fresh update, and coming with it is a classic Black Ops map that players have wanted to see return to the franchise for years.
In a tweet that caught a lot of fans off guard, Treyarch has revealed that a new update is coming to the game, including the new Vargo 52 Assault Rifle for Multiplayer and Zombies, a new Ferro Fury Tracer Pack, and the remaster of the classic Black Ops map WMD.
Gamers weren't expecting any more content from the game whatsoever, especially as it seems as though Call of Duty has plenty on its plate right now - but for those who still haven't grabbed Vanguard by the horns, this is a great treat that has come to extend the life of the game.
Is Anyone Playing Black Ops Cold War Anymore?
This update has brought up a lot of questions, including who is actually playing Black Ops Cold War at this stage with Vanguard still going strong and Warzone dominating Call of Duty player numbers.
It's hard to tell, but servers are still going strong, and though there are only 953 viewers of the game on Twitch at the time of writing, a lot of players are getting involved not just because they haven't picked up Vanguard yet.
Importantly, Cold War's gameplay still holds up with the hectic quality that a lot of players are playing Call of Duty for in the first place. Let's remember that the release of Cold War game with far fewer hiccups than what plagued Vanguard last year. Namely, we weren't hit with claims it was just another WWII shooter.
Regardless of whether the game is making numbers or not anymore, this is a great little update to rope in some players who have since moved on. WMD is still a fantastic map, and it's great to see it make its bold - if quiet - return.
