Black Myth: Wukong might've suffered a blow at its chances of landing awards for Game of the Year at the hands of Astro Bot, but there's no denying that the title has carried some tremendous weight on its shoulders in a year where game releases have been at a standstill.
Yet, Black Myth: Wukong has become quite the revelation worldwide, and now it seems on course to usurp 2023's Game of the Year. Just two weeks after release, Game Science's animalistic adventure is surging towards $1 billion in revenue and is on course to overtake Elden Ring's colossal sales records.
Black Myth: Wukong edges close to $1 billion in sales
According to a report from VG Insights, Black Myth: Wukong has already sold 18 million units on Steam alone, not even taking into account those digital sales for Xbox and PlayStation.
With the title selling at a base rate of $60, the report claims that the revenue sales on the PC platform alone are at a whopping $857.4 million, meaning it will gross over $1 billion if the sales continue on the upward trajectory towards 22 million.
Game Science's title also rakes in the playing time, showing that it's not just a one-hit-wonder. Currently, the report claims that the average play time for Steam users is 31.9 hours, which is impressive for a game just two weeks old.
Black Myth: Wukong set to shatter Elden Ring sales
In comparison to Wukong, Elden Ring's sales on Steam in the first month (twice as long as Black Myth's window) were at just 12 million - one-third less.
Of course, Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC ignited that wave, and now the title sits at 25 million sales as of June 2024, What is arguably even more interesting is the fact that Wukong still has so much expansion outside of China.
According to the original report, only 6% of the player count comes from the United States, which is less than one million copies (roughly 960,000). 76% of the player count hails from China, showing that if Wukung does gain more pace in the West, we could have one of the biggest-selling RPGs of all time on our hands.
