While it looked like Rocksteady Games had hung up the keys to the Batmobile, the Dark Knight could be unfurling his wings and getting ready to leap into action all over again. With the developer being remembered for the acclaimed trilogy of Batman: Arkham games, a new era could be just over the horizon.

Starting with Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, the franchise continued with the much grander Arkham City in 2011 and Arkham Knight in 2015. Although there were once rumours of a fourth game, Rocksteady has since moved on to focus on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - or has it?

What is the rumoured Arkham game?

The massive Nvidia GeForce Now leak turned up a tonne of potential games, however, the surprise mention of Arkham Insurgency definitely piqued our interest. Alongside a remaster of Arkham Asylum (what Batman: Return to Arkham wasn't enough for you?), the reemergence of the Arkham Insurgency name could mean big things for Rocksteady.

Way back when, there were sketchy plans for a fourth game that would've continued the story beyond Bruce Wayne's supposed "death" at the end of Arkham Knight. It's interesting to note that the Court of Owls were also tipped to be the de facto big bads, which is more than an eyebrow raise when you remember WB Montreal's Gotham Knights includes both of these plot points.

Is the next Arkham game really happening?

Nvidia has since spoken out and said that the leaks should be taken with a pinch of salt. Then again, you would deny something as massive as that. Airing on the side of caution, it would be strange for Rocksteady to return to Arkham when it's already put so much hype into Suicide Squad

Also, who could forget there were also reports that Rocksteady had been working on an open-world Superman game in the vein of the Arkhamverse? There were a few subtle nods to the Man of Steel, and although there was plenty of buzz about Superman getting his own game, it never came to be. Instead, it seems the Metropolis Marvel will be the de facto villain of Kill the Justice League

If you'd given us an Arkham Insurgency leak in the immediate aftermath of Arkham Knight, we'd have been inclined to believe it. Instead, we're going to resign this one to the maybe pile alongside the Superman game. Who knows, if Gotham Knights and Kill the Justice League are a hit, maybe WB Montreal and Rocksteady could work on their own DC Gaming Universe? The DCGU has a certain ring to it.
