Lara Croft never seems too far away from the minds of gamers, with the fabled Tomb Raider series carrying so much weight in the industry's history.
But it has been some time since Croft took to her hobby of getting stuck in the most ludicrous places, taking down beasts and bountying hidden treasures, as we've not had a mainline series game since 2018 - the longest gap in between the franchise's main instalments since Tomb Raider was first released in 1996.
The next game, announced in 2022, is now under the wings of Amazon Games, and as development trundles on, Boss Christoph Hartmann has now affirmed that the title has not been affected by the division of its studio Embracer.
Christoph Hartmann backs "huge" Tomb Raider progress despite studio division
Slated to "unify the timelines", there was irony in the strapline, as Embracer has now been divided up into three different studios earlier this year, leaving Tomb Raider and the upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO in unchartered territory.
Speaking to IGN at Gamescom though, Hartmann affirmed that Crystal Dynamics has been "fairly sheltered from everything going on with Embracer," leaving Tomb Raider fairly unimpacted.
"People obviously look at what the parent company is doing, but it never impacted on resources, never led to any changes on management for them, so they're fine," Hartmann said.
As for development, Hartmann claimed that the task at hand is "huge", with such an illustrious franchise.
"I mean, doing a new Tomb Raider, the bar is so high. The longer you go, the expectation goes higher, so it's a huge, huge task, but things are progressing," he added.
Little is known about the game aside from what the studio told us in its reveal, but it appears the boulder is rolling.
The Tomb Raider devs previously had to come out with comments saying the development hadn't been damaged by earlier Embracer layoffs in 2023.
But with two separate - and major - parent company staffing changes, it's fair to think that Tomb Raider might be in a bit of a mess. Still, without a release date, there's no rush to get Croft's next adventure back on track and Amazon will be keen to make sure the game succeeds off the back of its upcoming live-action series.
