With us waiting what feels like an eternity for the release of Hogwarts Legacy, it's easy to forget Avalanche Software's foray into the Wizarding World only came out in February 2023. We were initially meant to hop on our brooms in 2021, and while the potions got to brew a little longer, some still felt it wasn't as magical as it could be.

While it seems Hogwarts Legacy has been pushed out of the Game of the Year race by the likes of Baldur's Gate 3 and the Resident Evil 4 remake, it was still a hot contender at one point. There are continued reports of a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, and even if the base game is being abandoned, fans aren't leaving it behind just yet.

Disclaimer: While the creator of the Harry Potter franchise was not directly involved in the creation of Hogwarts Legacy, their comments on social media around transgender people are hurtful and dangerous given the size of their platform.

We’d implore you to read our explainer of the controversy so far, and consider supporting trans rights charities where possible.

Hogwarts Legacy remaster shows what you could've had

Despite Hogwarts Legacy's infancy, that hasn't stopped loyal modders from jumping back into the adventure and waving their wands with a Reparo spell. Doing what Avalanche hasn't been able to (or simply doesn't want to), the Hogwarts Legacy Remastered mod pack fine-tunes the 2023 game and makes it feel like a whole new outing.

Available on Nexus Mods, the Hogwarts Legacy Remastered mod pack adds a lot to the famed school of Witchcraft of Wizardry. The big wins are the ability to duel anyone anywhere, enhanced NPCs (including them appearing at night), and 60FPS cutscenes.

If this wasn't enough to help Hogwarts Legacy feel like the new-gen game it was pitched as, there are enhanced broom controls, an extended character editor, and reworked Unforgivable Curses. All of these might seem minor, but if you put them together, it shows that Hogwarts Legacy was missing quite a lot at launch.

Don't expect a Hogwarts Legacy DLC

Many of these things could be fixed or officially expanded on by Avalanche, but sadly, there's no sign of them. Even before Hogwarts Legacy was released, there were fan pitches for DLCs heading everywhere from Azkaban to Durmstrang. None have come to pass, and the likelihood is dwindling.

We heard plenty about a potential Hogwarts Legacy DLC, with a Quidditch tease seemingly setting up the perfect expansion. Avalanche has had the final word, shutting down rumours and reporting in February that there were no plans for a DLC

Avalanche has indeed been a little busy working on Hogwarts Legacy's last-gen ports and the upcoming Switch release, so after that, who knows? Don't get your hopes up, though, because by the looks of it, it's over to modders to keep class in session.
