Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Release Date, Gameplay, Trailers, And More
The Marvel's Spider-Man 2 release date is official and fans could not be more excited to be slipping on the spandex and swinging into action. The explosive trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, developed by Insomniac Games, sparked elation among Marvel fans with a look at Peter Parker and Miles Morales joining together to beat the baddies.
However, despite some precarious leaks, Sony has managed to keep a lot of information about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 tightly under wraps. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man 2 release date, trailers, gameplay, whether it will be a PS5 exclusive, leaks, and of course, the return of Venom.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Release Date
The Marvel's Spider-Man 2 release date is due for 2023, according to its reveal trailer. It might seem like a far away estimate, and a rough one at that, but it's understandable given the huge amount of work that Insomniac has on its shoulders right now.
Not only has the developer only fairly recently released Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but it's also in the process of developing Marvel's Wolverine, the upcoming video game based on another iconic Marvel superhero. However, with no release date for Marvel's Wolverine in sight, it looks like it could be a while before the cigar-smoking mutant claws his way into video games.
So, it might seem a while until Marvel's Spider-Man 2 swings into action, that's if it doesn't come across any bumps in the road which could delay the game to a later date. However, it seems fans are willing to be patient, in order to give Insomniac Games the time it needs to create a quality game. As one fan commenting on the trailer said: "Take your time and let this not be just another identical gameplay. Let it be worth the wait for a whole new feeling of a Spider-Man game."
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Trailers
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 had, previously, been teased by the star behind the motion-capture and voice behind Miles Morales, Nadji Jeter. Finally, the upcoming game was announced alongside a very glossy and cinematic trailer which premiered at Sony's PlayStation Showcase in September, 2021.
There was no indication about gameplay, but the trailer did not disappoint. Viewers got to see Peter Parker and Miles Morales use a lot of web-slinging combat against their enemies on the dim-lit streets of New York. Not only that, but the trailer showed Peter sporting an exciting new suit for Peter Parker and, then, lurking in the shadows was the terrifying villain himself, Venom. Kraven The Hunter will also be rocking up to cause mayhem as usual.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Is It A PS5 Exclusive?
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is currently being developed as a PS5 exclusive, sorry PS4 owners. Whereas both the 2018 Marvel's Spider-Man game and Miles Morales are both playable on PS4 and PS5 consoles, Spider-Man 2 will only be available to play on PS5 consoles. However, this isn't an entirely shocking move from Insomniac Games given how Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is also a PS5 exclusive.
There's no word, as yet, as to whether the game will available on PC. Yet, given how neither Marvel's Spider-Man or Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales are available on any PC platforms, the chances that Sony will go a different direction for Spider-Man 2 are slim.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Development
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was announced alongside a post shared on PlayStation's blog by Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games. In the post, eagerly announced the latest instalment to the Spider-Man game franchise alongside Marvel's Wolverine.
As well as going into a little more detail about Spider-Man 2, Schneider also stated: "Much of the development team that brought you Marvel’s Spider-Man is returning to produce Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, including Bryan Intihar (creative director) and Ryan Smith (game director)," which is great news for fans of the original game.
Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter will both be returning to reprise their roles as Peter and Miles, respectively. However, a new addition to the cast includes the legend of the Candyman film series, Tony Todd, who will be playing the symbiote-fuelled Venom.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Leaks
Even Marvel's Spider-Man 2 hasn't been able to escape the clutches of secrecy as leaks about the upcoming game began to circulate the internet. Of course, the information has to be taken with a pinch of salt, but if you're hoping to avoid any spoilers, look away now because...
The leak dropped a number of bombshells surrounding the plot of Spider-Man 2, including the reason that Peter uses the flashy new mechanical suit in the trailer, is because he acquires it fairly early within the game. As well as this, the leak claimed that Lizard and Mysterio will be making a surprise appearance as the game's protagonists. You can read more about the leak here but, again, it's important not to take this claim as the gospel truth.
It may seem a long while off before Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is finally released and players can come face-to-face with the tongue-tied villain Venom. However, for now, there's always Activision's 2004 Spider-Man 2 game, which will always be a classic in our eyes.
