You may want to know what the Lost Ark DPS Meter is, as the community is currently mixed on the recent release of the unofficial mod that lets users analyse combat data. Lost Ark is an MMO where you can go off doing your own thing mostly, but there are certain contexts, like dungeons and raids, where players often need to team up and work together to overcome an objective. So if you need to know what the Lost Ark DPS Meter is, along with how it works and why it's controversial, we've got you covered.

The Lost Ark DPS Meter is a modification developed for the game by a GitHub user called shalzuth, which allows players to look at the combat data from a dungeon or raid and see the specifics of how yourself and other players perform. It works by reading the data packets sent to your PC from the Lost Ark servers and parses the data out of them, allowing you to see the info on an in-game overlay, or an external window which breaks it down further into various damage meters.

This is controversial for a few reasons. While it may provide a more complete picture of how a combat encounter went, it can promote toxicity by highlighting the differences between classes, meaning players with the mod may choose not to run with certain classes they feel can't pull their weight in damage. It's also not officially endorsed by the developers, and can present a data risk, with the mod's GitHub page even warning that "the .pcap generated can potentially contain sensitive information." The mod maker does say that they don't save personal information, but it still provides another way for bad actors to gain this data.

Can You Get Banned For The Lost Ark DPS Meter?

As the Lost Ark damage meter mod isn't officially endorsed by Smilegate or Amazon Game Studios, there is a risk that they may ban users with it. Due to the issues mentioned above with personal data, and the potential to cause conflict between classes, it's likely not something that the developers want to tolerate.

While users have been asking for a more official way of seeing this data in-game, there are likely reasons that Smilegate have chosen not to implement it. They still have yet to comment on the modification, and they may provide a warning to the playerbase before punishing anyone, but it's still worth noting that if you download this, you are risking your chance to continue playing the game. If you want to take the risk and install the Lost Ark DPS Meter, you can find everything you need on the Github page.

That's all for our explainer on the Lost Ark DPS Meter, and now you know how the modification works, along with the potential risk of using it.
