Aside from your default character, you can unlock new characters in Raft as you progress through the game's story islands, letting you change up your appearance - which is especially useful for making everyone more distinct in multiplayer. While Raft is a multiplayer or solo survival crafting game, there is still a story to work your way through. So if you need to learn how to unlock new characters in Raft, we've got you covered.

  • We also have a breakdown of the long and arduous process for finding the Raft Crane Key

Firstly, it's worth noting that there are no real differences between all of the characters apart from their looks, so you're functionally just getting collectibles by unlocking all the characters. After unlocking a character in one save, they will also be unlocked for the rest of your sessions, and any friends in the game at that time will also unlock them.

There are six total characters in the game, two of which are the default protagonists that you unlock from the beginning, while the rest need to be found across the different story islands. These are:

  • Rouhi (default)
  • Maya (default)
  • Tala
  • Johnny
  • Elaine
  • Shogo

After finding a character, just speak to them and they will automatically be unlocked.

Johnny is located on Balboa Island, and once you arrive you will need to look out for Relay Station #6. This is up in the higher parts of the island, so you will need to do some climbing. Once you get to the foot of the building, climb the nearby staircase and you can find Johnny at the top.

Elaine can be found at Tangaroa Island. Before finding her, you will need to progress through the story on this island until the top of the Tangaroa Tower has been blown off. Once this happens, it will land in the ocean, and you can enter it through the roof to find and speak to Elaine, who is sitting on a chair.

Shogo is found on the snowy island of Temperance. You will need to solve the Observatory puzzle and figure out the Raft Temperance code, so you can unlock the safe and find the Selene Key. After this, find the Selene Research Facility building and solve the puzzles inside to gain access to the Reactor Room. You should come across a tunnel filled with snow, and on the left side there will be a computer you can interact with to unlock Shogo.

That's all for our breakdown of how to unlock new characters in Raft, and now you know where to find Tala, Johnny, Elaine, and Shogo.
