GTA 6 has been in the rumour mill for what feels like forever because while there's still a tonne of love for GTA V, it's no secret that after eight years of racing around Los Santos, players are looking for what comes next in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.

Even though we can't escape the runaway success of GTA V and the GTA Online spinoff helping it become the most profitable entertainment product of all time, disgruntled gamers are sick of waiting for the official word on GTA 6. In fact, there are plenty of us asking whether Rockstar Games is even working on GTA 6 yet.

Is Rockstar Games working on GTA 6?

GTA Multiverse

The immortal question of whether Rockstar Games is actually working on GTA 6 is a tough one to answer. Since the release of GTA V in 2013, the company has largely gone to ground. There have been continued updates to GTA Online, with eagle-eyed players looking for even the slightest hint of GTA 6 inside the online multiplayer.

Devs have also kept themselves busy with the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 and its own Red Dead Online companion in 2019. Finally, there are swirling reports that Rockstar could also be working on a possible Bully revival or sequel. If that wasn't enough to contend with, Rockstar has promised to readdress its own working culture after a number of employees spoke out in the wake of RDR2's release.

All of this means there hasn't been much in way of word from above. As far back as 2013, former Rockstar North President, Leslie Benzies, confirmed GTA 6 ideas were in the pipeline. Back then. Benzies told Develop Magazine, "We don’t know what GTA 6 will be, but we’ve got some ideas...We’ve got about 45 years’ worth of ideas we want to do. We’ll pick the right ones. It comes from the idea first".

Teasing what's next, Benzies continued, "Where it is going to be set is the first question. That then defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in".

Even when GTA 6 is eventually announced, expect there to be a big wait between reveal and release. Alongside hopes that GTA 6 will finally be announced next year, other sources claim the game won't be out until 2025. It remains to be seen whether there's any truth to this, however, it would suggest that Rockstar is already hard at work on the next-gen title. The problem is, the developer is notoriously cagey.

Do Rockstar Games job listings confirm GTA 6?

GTA 6 Map

Thankfully, the ever-growing Rockstar Games job page is a great place to start looking for hard evidence that GTA 6 is already on the way. Long before a game is officially revealed to the masses, studios are known to recruit for everything from Level Designers to Narrative Writers. If you want a clue about what Rockstar is currently working on, check out the official site.

We covered how a job listing for Live Events Coordinator could've teased an imminent announcement of GTA 6, while a recruitment drive for Cinematic Gameplay Capture Artist suggested a trailer could be just around the corner. Both of these turned into a dead-end, and although Rockstar is presumably filling/has filled these roles, we're no closer to GTA 6 officially being given the green light.

Elsewhere, Rockstar's job page has fueled the fires that multiple projects are in the pipeline. 2021 is a big year for GTA thanks to the upcoming release of the GTA V Expanded and Enhanced edition, however, eyebrows have been raised about a potential update for GTA III or even a Vice City remaster.

Back on the GTA 6 hype bus, job listings have also teased a modern setting that would make it an official GTA V sequel rather than Vice City continuation. Then again, reports of multiple time periods could bring together the best of both worlds.

For now though, Rockstar is keeping its cards close to its chest and is refusing to reveal whether it's already working on GTA 6. Hopefully, some official news will come racing into our lives soon.
