Genshin Impact Refinement: How To Upgrade Weapons
Genshin Impact refinement and enhancement systems are similar and can easily be confused, especially if you’re at the beginning of your playthrough. There are already many different levelling up systems in Genshin Impact, a level for your character, for their Adventurer Rank, artifact levels and now weapon levels. Genshin Impact Refinement: How To Enhance Weapons

To enhance a weapon, navigate through the character menu, weapons and enhance. A weapon of one or two-star quality can be enhanced with materials to upgrade its base attack damage. This stat is measured in levels and the type of upgrade material you use will dictate how much EXP you receive. Other weapons can be used in this process, any weapon will qualify which is a great way to recycle old weapons that you’ve outgrown.
Other key items for enhancement are Enhancement Ores which have three levels of rarity and EXP. Enhancement Ore is a one-star rarity which gives 400 EXP. Fine Enhancement Ore is a two-star rarity and gives 2,000 EXP. Finally, Mystic Enhancement Ore is a three-star rarity and yields 10,000 EXP.
These Ores can be rewarded from quests, daily challenges, and promo code giveaways. Once a weapon is enhanced to level 20 it will become ascended, meaning that the next 20 levels will be ascension levels and will require rarer materials to level it up. Refining weapons is essentially the next step from enhancing and can only be applied to three-star weapons. To refine a weapon, you must have a duplicate of it in the process which will be consumed. This will not only increase the base attack of the weapon but also the special ability applied to it. Navigate through the same menu options and the refine option will be under 'Enhance' if the weapon qualifies for the process. Each three-star weapon can be refined five times until it reaches rank five of refinement.

Whether the refinement process is worth it will depend on the player. If you find yourself attached to a weapon with an impressive ability, refining it and increasing its abilities can be tempting but no easy task. It is extremely difficult to gather rare weapons from the games’ gacha system, and so it will be even more difficult to acquire two of the same kind of weapon.
The common consensus in the Genshin Impact community is that three-star weapons are worth refining, and four-star weapons if you can craft more of them to use in the process. For rarer five-star weapons, the choice is yours, but it may be a hefty cost.
