The first thing everyone asked when they started up Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 was "did Fortnite remove building?" Fortnite and building are synonymous, but the new season has introduced some major changes to this key gameplay mechanic. Let's go over what's happening to building in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 and related changes/additions.

Yes, it is no longer possible to build in Fortnite's main Battle Royale modes. Leading the Imagined Order in the war against The Seven, Doctor Slone has cast an EMP on the island that makes it impossible to build.

To the dismay of some and the excitement of others, Fortnite players must now exclusively use the environment around them as cover. As compensation for the removal of the building mechanic, all players now have an Overshield on top of their Shield and Health. This Overshield provides a little extra survivability for those moments when you get stuck out in the open with no shelter.

Without access to their building blueprints, the island's inhabitants have been forced to adapt in other ways as well. Now, everyone runs faster and can sprint faster. Additionally, you can now mantle to pull yourself up to high ground coupled with a new ability called shoulder bashing that allows you to break through doors in one fell action. Use this newfound athleticism to escape the sticky situations you'd have previously just built through.

If you just can't stand Fortnite with no building — don't worry — you're in luck. Fortnite building is unaffected in competitive/Arena playlists as well as in Team Rumble and Creative Islands. Pro builders can take refuge in these playlists to get their building fix.

Regardless of your stance on Fortnite taking out building, the change is not permanent. Building is scheduled to return to Fortnite on March 29. This gives players a little over a week to experience the world of Fortnite without building.

Keep in mind, Epic Games is likely testing the waters and studying the community's perception of Fortnite with no building. If all goes well, it wouldn't be shocking to see a permanent "no build" Fortnite mode show up at a later date.

So, Fortnite did remove building, but it's only temporary. Players will have until March 29 to enjoy a build-free version of Fortnite. A "no-build" limited-time mode may make an appearance down the road, but you'll be able to build again in the standard game modes before too long.
