Destiny 2 Vow of the Disciple lore books are amongst some of the newest legends being unfurled in the game. The Shattered Suns lore books are available to unlock now, allowing you to delve into the history of the terrifying new Destiny 2 raid boss, Rhulk. If you've used our Destiny 2 Vow of the Disciple Raid guide and not managed to find all of the lore books, there are a few further steps. Here’s where to find the Shattered Suns lore books and how to unlock all ten to get the Imperious Sun Ghost Shell.

The ten Shattered Suns lore books can be unlocked in Vow of the Disciple or in the extra mission which was unlocked after the World’s First raid clear, Preservation. Collecting all of the Shattered Suns lore books will also unlock the Imperious Sun Ghost Shell, so even if you’re not particularly interested in the storytelling, it’s still worth spending some time to find and unlock them all.

Destiny 2 Vow Of The Disciple Lore Books: How To Get Books 1-5

The first five Shattered Suns lore books are available in static locations as part of a puzzle in the Vow of the Disciple Raid. Enter the Pyramid after following the usual Disciple’s Bog pathway and transporting the boat to its destination.

After making your way into the Pyramid, follow the usual path down the large drop and towards the room full of symbols. It’s not difficult to find, as the symbols are on large double-sided plinths. To complete the puzzle, you and your fireteam will need to activate four of the symbols by following a sequence of instructions.

From the entrance to the room, look to your right and you’ll find a series of barred windows. One of these doesn’t have bars over it. Send one member of your fireteam through the unbarred window and they’ll find a wall which gives information on the symbols you need to activate to get the triumph. There will always be four of these, divided into three rows and four columns. The first two rows will always be the same; four Guardian symbols on the top row, and then the symbols for Enter, Enter, Commune, and Kill on the second row.

The Guardian symbol represents you, the Guardian. The second row explains what the Guardian must do to the symbol below it. Enter means to melee, Commune means to interact, and Kill means to shoot. The third row will show which symbols you need to activate by the method dictated. After completing the series of actions with the correct symbols, the triumph will appear at the bottom of your screen.

For example, our sequence in the above image translates to:

  • Guardian Enter Darkness - Melee the Savathun symbol.
  • Guardian Enter Guardian - Melee the Guardian symbol.
  • Guardian Commune Kill - Interact with the Ascendant Plane symbol.
  • Guardian Kill Earth - Shoot the Witness symbol.

You will need a fireteam of at least four people to complete this. Assign a symbol and a role to each and establish your order. Complete the sequence quickly but without overlapping your inputs. You can easily tell whether the symbol has been activated correctly, as it will emit an orange glow from around its edges. If you make a mistake along the way, you can interact with the knowledge symbol above the instructions mural to reset the symbols and start again from the beginning.

You can repeat this method up to five times to get half of the Shattered Suns lore books unlocked, but you cannot do this more than once per run after Bungie patched a bug that allowed you to go forth into Acquisition, wipe, and return to the room to repeat the process. You can only find the first five in the raid itself, and the second five in Preservation and will need to quit out of the raid entirely before re-entering and getting back to the puzzle section.

Destiny 2 Vow Of The Disciple Lore Books: How To Get Books 6-10

Upon the launch of the Vow of the Disciple Raid, a race for World’s First began. As soon as the first team had completed the Raid, a new mission unlocked in Savathûn's Throne World; Preservation. Preservation is a shortened, easier difficulty version of the Raid entrance, working your way through the Disciple’s Bog to enter the Pyramid.

Upon entering the Acquisition area of the mission, a simplified version of the full Raid mechanics plays out, with Guardians entering certain rooms to trigger symbols and kill the waves of enemies that spawn. Upon completing the mission, there are five hidden interaction points to discover which will unlock books 6-10 of the lore.

Head to the far end of the platform which, until recently, was filled with orange-bar Scorn enemies and look for a plinth right at the edge of the platform. This should also be marked on your HUD for ease once you get close enough to it. You should interact with this pillar to unlock one lore book.

Turn around and head towards the room with the symbol for stop above the doorway. Go inside, and on the right-hand side of the room, there will be another point of interaction next to some murals on the wall.

Leaving this area and heading to the right will bring you to a room with the Give symbol above the doorway. Heading inside the room there will be a mural on the back wall with an interact point in front of it, trigger this to unlock another book.

Leaving this room and heading right again brings you to another interaction just outside the door to the entrance of Acquisition. This unlocks the fourth available book in this area.

The fifth, and final book can be unlocked by following a stairway to the right of the Traveller symbol. The interesting thing about these interaction points is that not only will they award the Shattered Suns lore books, but they also trigger intense and captivating voice lines from Rhulk himself. These are definitely worth listening to if you care about Destiny 2 lore.

Instead of the usual 30-second timer after a mission ends, Bungie kindly gave Guardians 1400 seconds at the end of Preservation to find, interact, and unlock all of the available lore books here, so don’t worry about running out of time. 20 minutes is more than enough to locate all of these.

Once you’ve unlocked all of the lore books, head to the triumphs section of your menu and redeem all of the relevant ones. Upon doing this for every lore book, you will be rewarded with the Imperious Sun Ghost Shell.

Even if you've followed our aforementioned raid guide to the letter, it isn't instantly obvious how to unlock the Shattered Sun lore books. Reading these lore books will give you valuable insight into Rhulk’s origin story, including the destruction of his planet Lubrae, and his intensely personal ties to The Witness. The story lays some foundation and also instigates speculation about what could be coming next for the Destiny 2 universe.
