Cyberpunk 2077 Classes
After feeling like we've actually waited until the year 2077, CD Projekt Red is finally ready to open the doors to Night City and deliver Cyberpunk 2077 to the masses. Promising to be a genre-defining game for the ages, the sprawling sci-fi shooter puts you in the body of V - a totally customisable mercenary who's sent out to make their way in this backdrop of pistols and prostitutes.
While customisation is key to making V stand out from the crowd for a unique experience catered to each individual player, there's an altogether harder decision than deciding what colour hair you're going to pick today.
Cyberpunk 2077 has an ambitious class system that will decide how your version of V differs from others around you. Away from the cosmetic differences, developers ask players to select one of three distinct classes to decide how V's story first kicks-off. If you've got your copy of the game fresh out the box/downloaded, here's everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077 classes.
Cyberpunk 2077 Classes: Techie Class
Up first is the Techie Class for you wannabe inventors. Going full mad scientist, the Techie Class allows V to build their own arsenal of handy tools to make it (and hopefully not break it) in Night City. Techies are handy for creating Cybernetic Augmentations and are behind the likes of Johnny Silverhand's robotic arm. Using brains over brawn, Techies are best used lurking in the shadows rather than confronting enemies head-on. Although you can take on opponents using your customised weapons, it's probably better if you build traps and sabotage tech.
When it comes to the Techie Class, their Jury Rig special ability is an added extra that will help V repair or upgrade gear on the fly. This also applies to cyberware and weapons for when you find yourselves in a tight spot.
The Techie Class might be a valuable commodity, but to really earn some coin, you're best heading into the murky underworld of stolen tech weapons and espionage. Here, those quick-fingered Techies can make some proper money. The world is literally your oyster in the Techie Class, meaning there's no situation you can't craft your way out of.
Cyberpunk 2077 Classes: Solo Class
In terms of packing a punch with pure grunt, the Solo Class could be for you. As the name suggests, the Solo Class works alone, taking on whatever low-level job they can find. Whether it's playing bodyguard to a spoiled businessman or taking out a target as a hitman, the Solo Class never misses a session at the gym.
Unsurprisingly, muscle is at the forefront of the Solo Class. CD Projekt Red previously described the Solo Class as being a “Terminator power fantasy". No machine gun is too heavy, and no door is too tough for the Solo Class to make light work of.
Offering a more traditional style of play, the Solo Class is the ideal pick for those who want a heavy melee game where you barrel in and take on wave after wave of dim-witted NPCs. Solos get up close and personal, so you're sure to see plenty of visceral, bloody splatters if this is V's chosen path. Added to this, the Combat Sense ability lets V scan an area for potential threats and then bulldoze their way in to take on the whole group at once.
Cyberpunk 2077 Classes: Netrunner Class
Last, but by no means least, is the Netrunner Class. If you thought Techies had the machines and monsters of Night City at their disposal, that's nothing compared to what the Netrunner Class can do. If hacking is the aim of the game, call on the Netrunner to do your dirty work for you.
This isn't a simple case of hacking a security system or turning an automated turret against enemies. Here, the Netrunner Class lets you actually hack into someone's cybernetic limb and turn it against them - Johnny Silverhand had better watch out!
With a backdrop like Cyberpunk 2077, hacking opens up a whole new city of opportunities for the Netrunner Class. You'll need a little more patience to strategise - which might alienate some from playing as a Netrunner. Still, the slowly, slowly, catchy monkey methodology has been a fan-favourite feature of franchises like Metal Gear, so why not try it out here?
All in all, the Netrunner Class is the middle-ground between tech and attack. The Interface special ability lets Netrunners directly communicate with the city's various gadgets and gizmos.
CD Projekt Red reiterated that Cyberpunk 2077 would have a "fluid" approach where you can pull from different classes. It just so happens you're most likely to veer toward one in particular.
In a statement, developers explained, "Unlike with the original 2020 where you're locked into one of those things and then could pick and choose a bit, in ours we want you to be able to pick and choose very fluidly and freely to play the way you want to play".
Ultimately, most of us will probably pick from a pool of skills combining Techie, Solo, and Netrunner. Importantly, you aren't completely locked into one class. Now you know everything there is to know about Cyberpunk 2077 classes, the hardest decision now is which one to pick.
