The Baldur's Gate 3 max level is a controversial topic in the early access RPG right now, because the current build of the game has it set astoundingly low. The immensely popular RPG series has made a return after the success of Divinity: Original Sin 2 but as is often the case with early access games, Baldur's Gate 3 is lacking in certain features, including the level cap. So if you're wondering what the Baldur's Gate 3 max level is and whether the level cap will be increase, you've come to the right place.

As with most RPGs, player progression is marked by levels. And considering Baldur's Gate 3 is using the Dungeons & Dragons 5e ruleset, fans will know that the typical level cap sits at 20. However, in Early Access, the Baldur's Gate 3 level cap sits at a measly 4.

If you’re worried that you’ll be locked into level 4 for the entirety of the game, let us settle your concerns. The level 4 cap is only temporary and restricted to Early Access, but you may be wondering why?

Well level 5 is when a lot of Baldur’s Gate 3 classes start to ramp up in power, because that's when spellcasters gain access to Level 3 spells. Dungeons & Dragons fans will be very familiar with just how useful and powerful spells start to get once you reach the level 3 spells. Counterspell, Fireball, Haste, Lightning Bolt, Summon Fey, and so on. And that’s not even mentioning how there are still a large number of Level 2 spells still missing from the game.

So if you were hoping you’d see another level increase in the next Panel of Hell hosted on the official Larian Studios Twitch channel, you might be disappointed. For the time being, Early Access’s level cap will remain fixed at 4.

The next thing you might be wondering is what’ll be the max level a player can reach in the full game? Sven Vincke, Founder and Creative Director at Larian Studios, has said during a previous Panel of Hell that the max level will be above 10 but below 20. In fact, he mentioned that the original max level would be 10 but after playtesting, they’ve chosen to increase that. Leading many fans believe that the max level in the base game will be around 12 or 13, with the potential to go higher in future expansions.

If you’re disappointed that there’s been no confirmation whether players can hit level 20, there’s a few things to consider. Level 20 characters have access to some game-breaking spells and mechanics, some of which simply don’t work in a video game. For example, level 20 Clerics can essentially ask their God for a favour.

This is easy to do in the regular TTRPG format, you ask your Dungeon Master for a favour and they may or may not oblige. However, how could you programme such a feat in a video game? Not only would it be a programming nightmare but having players able to access 9th level spells (we’re looking at you Wish) would mean there would rarely be a challenge in any encounter.

There you have it for Baldur's Gate 3 level cap, but as with any Early Access production, this might be subject to change as the studio keep working on the game. If you're anxiously awaiting for Baldur's Gate 3 release, why not try out Tiny Tina's Wonderlands in the meantime, another D&D themed RPG.
