You Can Now Ride Sandworms In No Man's Sky, For Some Reason

Watch out Dune, you’re not the only one with giant sandworms, as No Man’s Sky has added a Halloween update that turns them into pets and more.

Halloween events are a special time in video games, full of spooky gimmicks and scary game modes. This year we have Warzone’s Haunting of Verdansk, and the returning Fortnitemares, but No Man’s Sky now has its own event called Expedition Four: Emergence.

What is in the No Man’s Sky Halloween event?

Hello Games has released a trailer for the update, which features scenes of a player riding sandworms and wandering a duststorm-ridden planet. The update adds a narrative expedition - which is an apparent first for the space exploration sim - all about fighting Titan Worms and sinister cults. It also offers some exclusive rewards for players who complete sections of the expedition.

Possibly Dune inspired, the expedition drops players into the red planet of Wasan, full of Titan Worms, sandstorms, and the alien Vy’keen cult. Some of the rewards available to players include an alien head called the Casque Head (shown in the trailer), the ability to turn sandworms into pets and ride them, a new alien skull trophy for spicing up your base, and more. It also features more variants of the Titan Worm that look a tad more frightening with their numerous jaws. Hello Games made some little VFX improvements too, revamping the particle effects for meteors, explosions, smoke, laser impacts, and dust. The full patch notes can be found here.

For the biggest fans of No Man’s Sky, you can also cop some new merch from the Hello Games store. They released a five-year anniversary collectible pin, with a nice metallic sheen, along with a new beanie just in time for the Winter months. The Halloween event doesn’t have a definite end date yet, but with the end of October looming, players may not have long to dive in.

How is No Man’s Sky these days?

The game has come a long, long way since its infamous launch. It was hugely controversial due to the outright lies made by game director Sean Murray during the lead-up to its release, putting Peter Molyneux’s history of fibbing to shame. Since then, update after update has slowly turned the game into a complete experience (with lots of creative opportunities), redeeming it in the eyes of gamers, which has finally brought its overall review percentage on Steam into the positive.

If you want to finally give No Man’s Sky a go, it’s available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and select PC platforms.
