Will The CDL 2021 Still Be Taking Place Online?
The Call of Duty League, like many other esports, had to diversify their structure in 2020 due to the ongoing global pandemic. With the original structure boasting 12 "Home Series" (one in each city of the franchised teams) the league was forced to cancel the LAN event after just four visits. The last offline event saw Los Angeles host the teams in March where, befittingly, Dallas Empire came out victorious.
Heading into the 2021 season, the league has never been more poised with intense storylines and surrounded by the core history of the esport. With four versus four throwing some spanners in the works, Hector "Hecz" Rodriguez has been busy reacquiring the Green Wall, which left some wiggle room for Matthew "Nadeshot" Haag to reignite his Call of Duty love affair.
Everything seems to be falling into place for the CDL, except the uncertainty surrounding the format.
The developers recently revealed that the structure will be getting a mix-up, and will be split into five championships, all of which will have one major event and three Home Series. With 15 Series in total and five Majors, the decision was also made to have all 12 teams at each event, meaning this schedule is full to the brim.
But, will we be able to see these home series live and in person?
The likelihood is that the Call of Duty League 2021 Season will commence online. No definitive answer has been given by the league, but early reports of a bubble environment were ridiculed.
Activision has to reveal whether they will fund a bubble for Call of Duty players to be collected within, which is making it increasingly unlikely with every day passing.
The aforementioned Hecz also revealed that Matthew "FormaL" Piper will be forced to move into the Heczquarters facilities should he want to compete this season as the league have made it a requirement that teams are competing from the same address this year. With this move, it becomes more convincing that the season will be held online.
As for the latter stages, this may change, but who's bold enough to predict the future of the pandemic?
