Watch Dogs: Legion Online Mode Has Been Delayed
Ubisoft has delivered a blow with Watch Dogs: Legion and confirmed the game's online multiplayer has been delayed until 2021. The third chapter of the hacking Watch Dogs franchise left the USA behind and headed to London for a whole new adventure. Unlike previous entries, Legion doesn't focus on a specific character, and instead, has you recruit different members of the DedSec hacker group.
When it comes to Legion's multiplayer plans, a December 3 update was supposed to introduce co-operative free-roaming, missions, and PvP challenges for up to four players. Now, developers have vowed to start from the ground up and fix the single-player campaign before tackling multiplayer. Unfortunately, this also means the much-anticipated deathmatch "Spiderbot Arena" (featuring eight players) has also been shifted to next year.
Watch Dogs: Legion online multiplayer - what happened?
According to Ubisoft, developers are focussing their efforts on fixing single-player. For the time being, the team is working on tweaks to GPU performance on PC, cross-save progression, optimised stability for Xbox One and Xbox S, and crash issues on the PlayStation 5. These are just a few of the problems that have been plaguing Legion since its original release in late October.
In a blog post discussing Watch Dogs: Legion online, Ubisoft explained, "As part of our commitment to fixing the game’s issues, we’ve decided to delay the Online mode of Watch Dogs: Legion to early 2021. This will allow us to focus on fixing issues with single player, and it will give us more time to test the Online experience to help ensure a smooth launch of the mode".
When will Watch Dogs: Legion online release?
The dev team clearly has its work cut out with a particularly buggy launch for Legion. With a release date of "early 2021" being pretty broad, it doesn't exactly fill us with much hope. Added to this, the blog post reiterated that the company is "committed to fixing these issues and will not stop until everyone can experience the game as intended". The 2.20 patch came out on November 26 to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/Series X.
Whether the game's first big update manages to alleviate some of the problems we've been encountering remains to be seen. Here's hoping it's a speedy fix and we'll be able to jump into Watch Dogs: Legion online sooner rather than later. We also assume Ubisoft is aiming for online to have less problems than the main game. Either way, it's ironic that in a game based around hackers, we're seeing so many bugs.
