Warner Bros. Reveals Injustice Movie Release Date

The gods are among us, as Warner Bros. reveals the release date for its Injustice spin-off movie. While the concept for a DC fighting game didn't come to fruition until 2013, it amazes us it took someone so long to think of the idea of Injustice.

Seeing your Mortal Kombat favourites lock horns with the likes of the Justice League, Joker, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the two Injustice games have made a killing for NetherRealm Studios and already spun off into a comic series.

It was only a matter of time before we got an Injustice movie, and although it's not quite a live-action movie where Henry Cavill squares off against Hiroyuki Sanada, an animated outing is the next best thing. Now, we've got an official release date for the next entry to the DC Animated Universe.

When is Injustice coming out?

According to Warner Bros., the simply titled Injustice is coming to home video on October 19 - on both Blu-ray and Digital release. The animated movie features a who's who of familiar faces and will be based on the Injustice God Among Us: Year One comic arc.

There's some snazzy box art that features a seemingly good Batman and Wonder Woman battling a villainous Superman. After playing Green Arrow in Smallville, Justin Hartley is having a change of character and will portray Superman in Injustice. He's joined by Inhumans' Anson Mount as Batman, with Mount also known for playing Captain Pike on Star Trek: Discovery.

Finally, there's a who's who of DC talent, with Matt Peters (Justice League Dark: Apokolips War) in the director's chair, alongside a screenplay from Ernie Altbacker (Batman: Hush). There will be a sneak peek at Injustice at this year's DC FanDome - which is already shaping up as one to watch.

In terms of special features, there's the "Adventures in Storytelling - Injustice: Crisis and Conflict" featurette, where those behind the movie explain how they brought the games to life. There are also "DC Universe Movies Flashback" and "From the DC Vault" of looks at The Death of SupermanReign of the SupermenJustice League - Injustice For All, Part I and Justice League - Injustice For All, Part II.

What is Injustice about?

Just like the long-running Mortal Kombat franchise, Injustice has a surprising amount of lore to it. In the original, the Joker was up to his usual schemes and tricked Superman into killing Lois Lane - which sent the world of DC down an even darker path. Taking control of DC favourites, you kicked, punched, and spun your way through various battles to bring down a dark Supes and his villainous buddies.

It was much of the same in Injustice 2, with Prime Universe Superman working with Multiverse Batman's Insurgency to stop a new team of bad guys (and girls). Injustice 2 had a much bigger roster of characters, and much like we've regularly been getting new Mortal Kombat games since 1992, we're hoping for Injustice 3 soon.

Fans of the DCAU and beyond were pumped to jump into spandex for Injustice. However, when Mortal Kombat oversee Ed Boon shared the news, the thread was quickly filled with those asking for Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12. With confirmation we'll be getting no more MK11 DLCs, look out for this year's FanDome.
