It seems like Sledgehammer Games has a type, doesn’t it? After developing Modern Warfare 3 and Advanced Warfare for the Call of Duty series, the publishing team has made a bold step into the world of World War II. They’re clearly a fan of the setting, and after the critical acclaim of Call of Duty: WWII they’d be mad to step away - and thus, Call of Duty: Vanguard is born of their name.

Despite WWII and Vanguard sharing the same period of ( fictionalised) history, Sledgehammer has been quick to make it clear - these two titles are vastly different games and there will be no crossover whatsoever between them.

It would be a fair assumption that Vanguard might cross over with WWII in way of locations and events, but we have been assured that there will be nothing similar from the 2017 shooter in the new title.

Game Director Josh Bridge and some other members of the Vanguard team spoke with AsiaOne about the direction of the game. Bridge was quick to mention that the game will be similar to WWII in era, but not in story. "Although we love the story that was told with Daniels and the band of brothers in the Western Front, we’re super excited about these new characters and new fronts, and also to go after the birth of Special Forces - anything beyond that felt like we’d be forcing it to happen."

Added to this, Campaign Creative Director David Swenson also weighed in and suggested that players won’t be "retreading the American squad landing or fighting across France".

Later on in this interview, Studio Head Aaron Halon makes a wholesome dedication to the team that was worked on Vanguard. "I think that for a lot of development teams, after you do things for over ten years, it’s always healthy to reevaluate where you’re at", he said. "To relook at your future, and to kind of plot out a vision for what you want to do. That’s something that we’re really proud of at Sledgehammer.

"We’ve focused a whole lot internally on our teams and on our talent, and it’s really led to where we are today. We couldn’t be more proud of Vanguard and how the game has come together and we can’t wait to share more of it."

Despite previous worries Vanguard would miss its 2021 release date - and others already panning the wartime epic before it's even out - the game still has the potential to surprise even its biggest critics. It’s nice to see that, connection to WWII or not, Vanguard is something that the team is genuinely proud of. It means that the upcoming Call of Duty is likely a labour of love and is bound to be all the better for it.
