Hit the trenches because the new Call of Duty game is nearly upon us. Like clockwork, we've become accustomed to Activision rolling out the big guns on an annual basis with a whole new Call of Duty. Now, someone thinks the release date for the mythical Call of Duty 2021: Vanguard has been leaked early.

As it stands, Activision has a rotating roster of development studios that each bring their own signature style to proceedings. While Infinity Ward is known for its Modern Warfare games and ATVs, Treyarch packs a punch with Zombies, and Sledgehammer Games is remembered for its period games.

With Sledgehammer at the helm of Call of Duty 2021, it sounds like a blast from the past with another World War II game. It's Sledgehammer's first go since the divisive Call of Duty: WWII from 2017, but with hopes it'll be second time lucky, all eyes are on whether the developer can deliver.

What is this leaked Vanguard release date?

According to Twitter account PlayStation Game Size, there's a packed schedule of Vanguard reveals on the way from Activision. Importantly, we should be looking toward Gamescom 2021. Following the campaign of last year's Black Ops Cold War, PlayStation Game Size expect a tease between August 17 to 19, followed by a full reveal on August 23/24, and an action-packed trailer at Gamescom on August 26/27.

If all of the above is to be believed, it would follow exactly in the footsteps of Cold War and land with a magic number of November 13 for a release date. Giving Vanguard the exact same release date as Cold War seems unlikely, however, the first or second week of November seems like a plausible release date for Call of Duty 2021: Vanguard

Is the Vanguard release date likely?

Remember, it wasn't long ago we were worried there wouldn't be a new Call of Duty game at all in 2021. Only last month, rumours suggested Modern Warfare 2 Remastered would replace Vanguard because the latter was a "f*****g disaster". There were claims Sledgehammer would go back to being a support studio, but maybe it was the kick up the backside the developer needed.

We know that Cold War wasn't exactly a surprise reveal thanks to a plethora of leaks getting the jump on an official reveal. Still, the tease of what was on the way via Call of Duty: Warzone was a nice touch. Considering Warzone is as popular as ever, expect to see similar teases of a potential WWII setting popping up in Verdansk '84.

Elsewhere, there was a cryptic campaign with influencers that didn't exactly set the world alight, so let's wait and see if Sledgehammer can improve. As with everything Call of Duty, expect leakers to make the first move and reveal everything before Activision can put them in its crosshairs
