Vanguard Is The Start Of A New Era of Zombies
Call of Duty: Vanguard has a lot going for it right now. Fans are hoping the game will be able to kick off a new era of competitive play that Cold War struggled to establish, as well as providing some high-quality multiplayer skirmishes and a campaign mode that will actually engage players for the first time in a while.
There’s a lot resting on the shoulders of this title - but arguably, Call of Duty has never had so much firepower to live up to the hype. One mode that Vanguard simply can’t mess up though, is Zombies. The fan-favourite is one that a certain subset of Call of Duty players gets very intense about.
With Vanguard's mode serving as a prequel to the events of Cold War Zombies, there’s suddenly a lot of pressure on it to be of high quality. But judging by the narrative structure of the mode, chances are fans will be very happy with it.
Vanguard Zombies Could Change The Mode Forever
Some of the narrative threads of Vanguard’s Zombies mode have been revealed, and this year’s entry to the mythos looks to draw from the past to build a brand new future.
According to the official Vanguard blog, the story begins in Der Anfang, which sees the beginning of the experiments at Projekt Endstation that tore a hole between realities and opening the rift to the Dark Aether.
It then follows the Nazis discovering ancient artefacts from beyond the veil, each associated with a powerful demonic force, explaining why we see the giant four-armed beast in the trailer. For those asking, it's known as Kortifex The Deathless.
He is joined by Saraxis The Shadow, Norticus The Conquerer, Inviktor The Destroyer and Bellekar The Warlock. Each of them carries their own special abilities - all that can be used against them.
This is a big narrative step into the unknown for the franchise - but what does it mean for the wider world of Zombies?
What Does Vanguard Zombies Mean For The Mode At Large?
This return to World War II, with the added spice of demonic forces, is a grand step for the mode, going back to its roots while continuing to innovate on the story. Chances are, this will go down a treat with fans, taking it back to the very roots of the mode while adding a little extra something to ramp up the madness.
Chances are, from here on out, Zombies could get a little sillier - but frankly, that’s what’s best for it. You’re shooting zombies, after all, so realism isn’t exactly the name of the game.
The mode looks like something we’ve never seen before since we first met zombies in World at War, and we can’t wait to jump into Der Anfang to see what all this demonic fuss is about. Here's hoping the Zombies story continues in the rumoured Vanguard trilogy.
