Valkyrae Receives $200,000 For Charity From Anonymous Donor
Clearly there are no Scrooges to be found over on Twitch, as one very generous donor gave away $200,000 to charity during Valkyrae's 'Thankmas' fundraiser. As you can imagine, she was pretty damn happy.
We all have our own Yuletide traditions in the lead-up to the most wonderful time of the year. Whether it's doing a mad dash around the town for some hectic last-minute present shopping or sticking on your favourite Christmas film, it all goes to helping boost up the Christmas spirit. For others, it's the season for giving and showing generosity... or grabbing yourself some festive new Fortnite skins.
One kind soul certainly demonstrated their generosity by donating a whopping $200,000 to charity during Rachel "Valkyrae" Hofstetter's Thankmas fundraiser stream. If that doesn't bump them to the top of the nice list then nothing will.
Who Was Valkyrae Raising The Charity Money For?
On December 12, Valkyrae was hosting a stream to raise money for Seán "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin's Thankmas fundraiser. The event was set up to help earn money for the charity New Story, which "pioneers solutions to end global homelessness" by building homes along with constructing 3D printed houses for those living in inadequate living conditions.
Valkyrae was just 25 minutes into her eight and a half hour stream, but had already managed to raise nearly $8,000 thanks to donations from her fans. Valkyrae was then astounded to see that one anonymous viewer had donated $200,000 to the cause, blowing her original target of $100,000 completely out of the water. After sharing the money, the donor added: "Okay, happy birthday. Huge fan. Thanks for building homes which means a lot to me. Also, you need to change your goal." Valkyrae was absolutely astounded by the donation and, as well as expressing her gratitude, began to tear up from the stranger's generosity.
How Much Did Valkyrae Raise For Charity Overall?
By the end of her stream, Valkyrae and her donors had raised over $300,000 for New Story, tripling her original goal. Valkyrae claimed that every $10,000 would build one new home for those in need. If so, this means that Valkyrae's stream alone helped to build 30 new homes that the charity can give away in future. Not only that, but according to the Thankmas website, the fundraiser has managed to raise over $7 million. That's more than 700 new homes.
It seems the generous spirit is all around the internet at the moment, as Valkyrae isn't the only streamer who has helped to raise a mind-blowing sum in the lead up to Christmas. For example, there was the Minecraft player who found an ingenious way to raise money to help clean our oceans by surviving in an ocean-only Minecraft world and The Yogscast bagged £500,000 for charity thanks to the generous donations from viewers.
