Valheim Isn't Coming To Mac Because The Devs Don't Own One

Honesty is the best policy, normally. However, when it comes to Iron Gate Studio's Valheim, the developer has been more candid than usual and given a pretty lame excuse for why the blockbusting builder won't be coming to Apple Mac.

Since the release of Valheim in February, there's been plenty of talk that it'll make the leap from Windows and Linux to also include the Apple Mac. Gaming with Apple is a touchy subject right now thanks to the ongoing drama between the tech giant and Epic Games, however, don't expect to boot up Valheim on your Mac anytime soon.

Apart from being played on PC, there's a clever mod that lets you play Valheim on VR. For Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox owners, we're left wondering what all the fuss is about. However, as Valheim continues to be the talk of the town, the pressure is on for Iron Gate to bring it to the masses. We've got an update from the horse's mouth, and sorry, it's not the one you were probably hoping for.

Why isn't Valheim on Mac?

As the Valheim community demands to know what's going on with a potential Mac launch, Redditor u/AdministrativePast17 shared an email from Iron Gate itself. In a bizarre turn of events, the developer explained it won't bring Valheim to Mac because none of the team owns one. "We don't currently support Mac because we don't have a Mac computer at the office," Iron Gate said, "Adding Mac support and debugging and testing would take a lot of development hours that we don't have at the moment. In the future, it might be possible to add Mac compatibility".

With Valheim doing as well as it's doing, we're sure Iron Gate has enough money to stump up for a Mac. If not, Apple could surely gift the developer one? Also, it seems a shame to miss out on the potential of the Macbook community simply for not owning a piece of kit. At least devs don't completely discount the idea of Valheim coming to Mac, but by the sounds of it, it definitely isn't a priority.

Will Valheim ever come to Mac?

Mainly, commenters agreed the honestly of Iron Gate was refreshing. There are questions about how transparent the developer will be as it continues to grow. For the time being, the team is getting plenty of pats on the backs while Mac owners are locked out of playing Valheim. Just like Among Us' tiny development team of just three, there were only five who worked on Valheim. It's easy to see why they might be hesitant to plough so much time into adding the Viking favourite to Mac.

Even if you can't play Valheim on Mac, the community is alive and well with what's being dubbed the "new" Minecraft. The building community has shown off its creative juices to showcase everything from Minas Tirith to the Millennium Falcon inside Valheim. The runaway success of Valheim means Iron Gate doesn't need to focus on a Mac port for now, so we say the developers should sit back and put their feet up - they've earned it.
