Twitch Streamer Sets Incredible Zombies Record In 20 Days
When it comes to Activision's long-running Call of Duty, part of its ongoing success has been the loyal legion of fans that continue to jump into old titles and shoot up the battlefield. Among the best of the best, there's a lot of love for Treyarch's Zombies additions that have become a staple of the developer since 2008's Call of Duty: World at War.
Zombies has been another integral part of 2020's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but with some accusing Treyarch of sleeping on the beloved mode, there are hopes there are a lot more brain-munching zombies shuffling from the grave in 2022.
Now, one Twitch player has dived back into the dank depths of the franchise and smashed an old Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 record.
How did one Twitch streamer smash the Call of Duty Zombies record?
Streamer TomPhantasy has been chipping away at the round record during a 20-day grind. His big day came, and more than just beating the previous Nacht Der Untoten record, TomPhatasy smashed past it by 40 rounds and set a new world record of 255 rounds.
It was a labour of love for TomPhantasy, who started his epic journey on July 2. As TomPhantasy approached this milestone moment, hundreds of fans were cheering him on for nearly 300 hours of Black Ops 3 grind.
Speaking to Dexerto, TomPhantasy explained what it meant to beat the record: "The Zombies community has been supporting me for months when I have been attempting this record through the highs and lows". Revealing the struggles he faced, TomPhantasy added, "I knew I had to keep going, because ater 24.8 days the game freezes. This meant I had to play 13+ hours per day for those 25 days".
Expanding on the close calls, TomPhantasy said, "Over the past year, I have just tested what causes crashes and kept minimal programs open to try and prevent the game ending. I had a lot of help from another zombies player xXSn1p3rC4TXx who also holds a Black Ops 3 World Record".
“I’ve had multiple long games end in freezes or power cuts," said Tom, before discussing a "100-hour” run that was cut short when his power “suddenly cut out".
What's next for the Call of Duty Zombies record?
Posting on Twitter, TomPhantasy thanked his fans old and new for the support. It's been great to watch Tom's progress, but it hasn't always been a joy seeing the bullets and brains fly. On July 17, he wrote on Twitter, "Of course the hottest day ever recorded is when I have to sit inside and play 10hrs a day. Kill me". Thankfully, he defied the odds and repeated taunts of "255 nacht ain't happening" to leave the record in the dust.
The question now is, will anyone try and beat TomPhantasy? There's been a recent resurgence in players trying to break old records, and just like Ludwig's Twitch subathon sparked xQc to tease his own, will TomPhantasy's 20-day Zombies world record could spur other wannabes to try and topple him.
Known streamer InsomniaVirus could be Tom's biggest rival, with the Zombies fan recently hitting 100 rounds on Outbreak and a world record run of 675 rounds on Mauer Der Toten.
Tom is already looking ahead at what's next, with 2016's Gorod Krovi map in his crosshairs. The problem is, the map is hiding an "unknown freeze" that "can happen at any time". Either way, it sounds like TomPhantasy will be settling in for another marathon stream in the near future.
