We’ve had a lot of Star Wars games in the past, both good and bad, but for everyone that comes and goes, there remains the dream. The dream of scouring the galaxy for yourself in an open world, seeing the sights that the Star Wars universe has to offer with your own eyes, and going on adventures across one of the greatest fantasy worlds ever conceived.

Some games have tried to accomplish this, some have failed, and some haven’t made it through development, leaving fans hanging. Star Wars has deserved an open-world adventure game for so long, and yet, we’ve never been lucky enough to see it.

But after all these years, this could be about to change.

Open-World Star Wars Game In The Works At Ubisoft

Lucasfilm Games has now officially announced that a new story-driven open-world game set in the Star Wars universe is now in the works. It is being developed in collaboration with Massive Entertainment, the Ubisoft studio currently working on the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and were responsible for Tom Clancy’s The Division.

The announcement was made in a post to Twitter from Lucasfilm Games featuring a small video that suggests that “a new adventure begins”.

Though Ubisoft is still a controversial developer, this game is exactly what many have hoped to see from the world of Star Wars games, and just what the IP needed in the gaming world after the expiration of EA’s exclusivity deal.

Which Consoles Will Get The Open-World Star Wars Game?

The real question, as is often the case with upcoming games in the wake of the arrival of the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, is which consoles it will end up coming to, and which hardware it will be making the most of. And, given the fact that it has only now had its announcement, the chances are that it won’t waste its time coming to last-gen consoles.

This is likely to be a few years in the making, and by the time its release comes around, we’ll be too far into the console generation for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to get in on the action. It’s sad to be talking about games like this, but it looks like the last-gen console’s time could be up soon.

Despite this though, this new Star Wars game sounds like an absolute dream for fans - and it’s been a long time coming. We might have to wait a minute for it to launch, but damn, it’s going to be worth the wait.
