They should rename it The First of Us because fans are suitably losing it over a first shot of Pedro Pascal on the set of HBO's The Last of Us series. The Game of Thrones and Mandalorian star is heading up the live-action reimagining with GoT co-star Bella Ramsey by his side as Ellie.

With The Last of Us coming to HBO Max next year, filming is currently underway in Canada. We've had a first glimpse of the series, but for some, it looked like a still pulled from Naughty Dog's games - without giving much else away.

What does Pedro Pascal look like on The Last of Us set?

The first look at Pascal on the set isn't exactly revelatory, however, it gives a sense that showrunner Craig Mazin will be following the game series of the same name closely. Shared on Twitter by @TheLastofusNews and crediting the original photographer, it features Pascal sporting Joel's signature jacket.

Given that Pascal is wearing a mask, we annoyingly don't get to see whether he has a beard under there. Even if we're still waiting for a first official glimpse at Pascal stepping up as the surly saviour of Ellie, fans still couldn't get enough of the on-set snap.

One wrote, "Pedro understood the assignment", while another added, "Yup, that’s Joel Miller." A third concluded, "Each time I see new photos of the sets and the actors, I can't help but feeling extremely grateful that we're getting a real-life adaptation of the Last of Us. I'm just so happy we get to spend more time with Joel and Ellie, rediscovering these characters all over again."

When will we see more from The Last of Us?

With each snippet that leaks or is officially unveiled, we're one step closer to someone actually delivering a faithful adaptation of the beloved game series. Fans are swarming the set like the Infected, and now that we know Pascal is officially filming his role as Joel, the spoilers should come thick and fast. Just give us the goddam beard, Mazin.

Assuming The Last of Us is as big a hit as it looks like it could be, we'll be settling in with Ellie and Joel for a while. Looking at HBO's other big hitters, the likes of Game of ThronesThe Sopranos, and Boardwalk Empire have had multi-season runs. The Last of Us is yet to be given the green light for Season 2, but watch this space.
