The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II have become the stuff of gaming legend in their relatively short life. With the first game coming out only in 2013 and its polarising sequel following in 2020, Ellie and Joel’s heartbreaking story has entered the video game hall of fame - completely changing the face of storytelling in the medium.

It seems like fans aren’t ready to move on just yet, as one fan has transformed the story of The Last of Us Part II into its own anime.

What does The Last of Us look like as an anime series?

2D illustrator Caro Oliveira has shared a video of some anime-esque stills from The Last of Us Part II that look like they could be pulled straight from an official Netflix anime retelling. The video is a speedpaint, which shows the progress of sketching, drawing, and colouring the frames, which are pulled from select moments of the game.

The first is of Joel, and the frames cycle through the progress of art that features, Ellie and Dina, Abby, Yara and Lev.

This isn’t Caro Oliveria’s first dabble with video games, either. They've previously posted their artwork of Resident Evil 8’s Lady Dimitrescu on their Instagram back in June.

Their other works span a large catalogue of anime characters, namely from the likes of Attack on Titan and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It might not be on its way to Netflix, but HBO Max’s The Last of Us is currently in development, with The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal starring as Joel. He’s joined by Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna appearing as Tommy, and returning voice actress Merle Dandridge appearing as Marlene.

The series is currently filming and is set to release in 2022 at the earliest. It’s set to be incredibly exciting, and we can’t wait - but are we too greedy if we ask for this anime series to become a reality too?
