Who remembers the Game Shark, or the cheats baked into your Nintendo DS’ R4 card? Cheating - while it has been entirely demonised now in the era of online multiplayer gaming - was once the norm. Back in the day, who wasn't breaching the system for more Mega Mushrooms or unlimited Rare Candies?

Sadly for some, those days sadly ended some time ago. Cheating is no longer the goof it once was, with many gamers drawing a line under the lite hacks that came with these add-ons, in favour of pursuing a straight-edge gaming experience.

But now, there’s a way to take us back to the golden years and pack our games with cheats galore. Even if we don't condone cheating, a new third party accessory is bringing cheating back in a big way.

Why is the Switch Up 2021’s Game Shark

Cheating in Pokemon Sword and Shield, Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild just became possible, as the Switch Up has been revealed. The third-party accessory comes in the shape of a USB drive that plugs straight into the Switch dock. It gives your Switch the capability to run fresh cheats in your favourite games.

Interestingly, though, that’s not all the USB stick can do. The Switch Up also comes with the ability to pair any wireless controller to the Switch, so if you’d rather use your Xbox Series controller or DualSense when playing the Switch, the option is there.

While the accessory might be a massive throwback to the Game Shark days, it also comes with a controversial addition.

The greatest trouble with the Switch Up is that while it can offer harmless and fun cheats for single-player games, its capabilities stretch into the multiplayer world. Its applications allow Fortnite players to use an increased aim-assist and adds more programmed movements that make them much harder to hit.

Luckily, cheater ban waves have been sweeping across the game to make sure that those who are trying to cheat in the game are taken care of, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating that there’s a new avenue to cheat online games.

The Switch Up is a bit of a double-edged sword, but if you keep away from online games, it could be a great little accessory to help bolster your games. Just keep it quiet, yeah?
