Could A Multi-Platform Sunset Overdrive Sequel Be Coming Soon?
Not too long after its October 2014 release date, Sunset Overdrive became a firm cult favourite game on the Xbox One. It’s a good thing it did, too, as Microsoft put a lot of faith in its console exclusive to shift a good deal of consoles. While the name “Sunset Overdrive” hasn’t turned many heads in recent memory, it was a big highlight of the Xbox’s admittedly slim list of exclusive titles.
Fans of the game might have more to look forward to very soon, though, as leaked evidence points towards a potential return to Sunset City very soon. However, there’s a twist.
Who has Sunset Overdrive’s Trademark?
A trademark has appeared that suggests a potential return to Sunset Overdrive, but with a very specific caveat - the trademark belongs to Sony. It was first revealed on Twitter via Nibel, a popular gaming reporter who appears to have discovered the trademark.
It’s an interesting notion - what was once a premier exclusive title in the early days of the Xbox One’s lifecycle now has the potential to spread its wings and reach across platform boundaries to PlayStation. The game originally came to Windows 10 too, but given Microsoft’s ownership of Xbox, it’s hardly a mind-blowing step for developers Insomniac to take.
Insomniac’s retention of the game’s rights could have helped in negotiations with Sony for the trademark, but that doesn’t yet answer the all-important question.
What’s The Sunset Overdrive Trademark For?
Speculation has, of course, ramped into overdrive (if you’ll forgive the pun), and fans are guessing what this means for the Insomniac IP’s future. But as it turns out, an entirely separate leak could have the answer.
A new leak has surfaced on 4chan and shared around Reddit that suggests upcoming titles that are supposed to be announced in an upcoming State of Play conference, at some point this month. While 4chan might not be entirely trustworthy for the most part, some very specific details stick out in collaboration with Nibel’s discovery.
At the end of the list of games are two interesting titles - Sunset Overdrive Refreshed Edition, and a game called Sunset Apocalypse. This remake is set to come to PS4 and PS5 in Fall 2021, and Apocalypse, also produced by Insomniac Games, is presumed to come to the PS5 at a later date.
Call it a coincidence, but Nibel is a trustworthy source to many, and the State of Play leak arrived on 4chan hours before his tweet. If these puzzle pieces fit together as they appear to, it looks like we’ll be returning to Sunset City very soon, with a whole new adventure to boot.
It’s an interesting suggestion and one that’s incredibly exciting for fans of Sunset Overdrive. It also implies that just maybe, console exclusivity might not be as rigid as we’d once thought. We might have to wait and see if a State of Play conference will come this month, but if it does, we could have all the evidence we need to strap our sneakers on once again and get ready to grind some power lines later this year.
