Many inside and outside of the gaming community expected that the introduction of VR would turn the world of video games upside down. The remarkable innovation of bringing players even closer to the action was expected to shift the gaming space entirely, and while it’s made its bold steps, it’s not entirely there yet.

Some lumps and bumps have kept the gaming innovation from sweeping the world, despite some titles like Half-Life: Alyx sweeping critical acclaim. The systems that run VR are still in need of some help - which is where PlayStation comes in because, as it turns out, the next bold step in VR could be around the corner thanks to Sony’s gaming division.

As part of a report into PlayStation’s pivot from mobile phone screens to VR headset displays by Bloomberg, the publication spoke to reputable sources that have suggested the knowledge of PlayStation’s plans for their next step in VR. It is said in the report by this source that the successor to the PSVR will put to use OLED panels in the headset, and that the console would be set to release “in the holiday period next year”.

The OLED panels would vastly increase the system’s graphical fidelity, pushing the limits of what we know in VR and take players even closer to “perfect” immersion.

The next system in the PSVR lineage was announced in February, so it’s been a long time coming, and with this information, we have a better idea of what the finished console could look like. It was revealed that the controllers would feature a wrap-around design, and other reports have suggested the PSVR 2 could put haptic feedback and eye-tracking to use, so if all of these pieces of the puzzle can be put together, our vision of the new step into VR is a bold one.

The ideas for the new PlayStation VR system are incredibly ambitious - but if Sony can pull it off, they may have opened the door to yet another generation of gaming.
