Snakes, why's it have to be snakes? If you'd ever wondered whether the worlds of The Elder Scrolls and Indiana Jones could collide, it turns out they can. Heading out into Tamriel and looting various mythical items sound a lot like a job for Dr. Jones, but thankfully, there aren't any Nazis in Skyrim.

In a game that's nearly a decade old, one plucky player has taken leaf out of Indy's book and come up with an ingenious way to complete a quest - with a little help from 1981's Raider of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones' first adventure helped propel Harrison Ford into the Hollywood mainstream and includes some of the most iconic action movie sequences of all time. So, just how does this tie into Skyrim?

What is the Indiana Jones trick in Skyrim?

Posting on the Skyrim subreddit, u/Sublata completed the "Pieces of the Past" quest with a little ingenuity. Here, players have to head into the Cracked Tusk Keep to retrieve the Shards of Mehrunes' Razor. Those who know Skyrim like the back of their hand will have likely completed this a million times, however, have you ever seen it done this way?

Just like when Indy used a bag of sand to replace a golden statue in Raiders, the OP used a weighted potion to replace a Shard. Normally, we'd just barrel in, grab the Shard and do a runner in hopes of not being caught in the trap. As the video shows, yes, it's possible to snatch the Shard without triggering the trap. Very clever, very clever indeed.

Replying to the post, a fan said, "I love to do it, I take the object slowly (like you take the potion) to feel like Indiana Jones, is silly but is fun for me". Another wrote, "Oh ho ho.. now.. this is epic!", and a third concluded, "I usually look for a skull to do this. Seems appropriate somehow."

Not everyone was blown away though, with one sceptic concluding, "Yea but that potion could have saved your life 200 dungeons later. It's always better to never leave a potion."

Does the Indiana Jones trick really work?

If you've watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, you'll know things don't run quite as smoothly for Indiana Jones. The bag of sand was apparently too heavy, which lead to THAT iconic opening scene where he dashed away from a rolling boulder. Looking at the science behind the movie, the post soon descended into the madness of physics in Steven Spielberg's classic.

Critics reminded us that Indy wasn't as clever as he looked. One wrote, "Thinking that gold statue weighed the same as a bag of dirt was a rookie move", while another added, "Not just that but that he took dirt out of the bag and made it lighter. Way to go professor."

We've had a recent run on clever hints and hacks inside Skyrim, which shows just how alive the community is ahead of the Anniversary Edition's release later this year. As well as fondue being a surprising miracle food in Tamriel, there's the ability to shout butterflies out of the skies, or you could take some time out of your quests for a spot of bowling at Dragonsreach. If you fancy yourself as a fedora-wearing tomb raider, why not try the Indiana Jones trick for yourselves?
