As one of the most renowned names in global esports, never mind just Call of Duty, Seth "Scump" Abner is recognisable in almost all corners of the gaming sphere.

However, despite being around in the esports community since bursting onto the Black Ops 2 scene in 2012, as "[OpTic] Scumpii", the origination of his name has since been a mystery.

Well, just as 'The King' attempts to recover from Covid-19 to appear at his ninth consecutive World Championships, Scump has finally revealed the story behind his name - and it's a deep-fried masterclass.

Streaming alongside breakout Twitch star Thomas "ZooMaa" Paparatto and fellow competitors Anthony "Methodz" Zinni and Lamar "Accuracy" Abedi, Scump was asked about how his famous name was formed.

How Did Scump Get His Name?

The OpTic Chicago man admitted that his name's origin was from a "sort of unbelievable" story, filled with mouthwatering finger-licking chicken.

Scump said: "I was driving down the highway with my mum, on my way to my uncle's house, and I saw the word 'scrumptious' on a KFC billboard and I got "Scump" out of it. That's how I got the name Scump."

The former World Champion is the only esports player in the world to win back-to-back XGAMES gold medal, leading him to earn titles like 'The King' and 'The Ginja Ninja' from his OpTic fan base.

Long-time duo Matthew "FormaL" Piper also recently admitted that their partnership nickname of "T2P" (Time To Pound) was originally his own idea before Scump latched onto it, as almost a gimmicky in-game Clan Tag.

Scump's backstory is just one of many hilarious name origins in esports. League of Legends veteran An "Balls" Lee followed in the footsteps of retired Dota 2 player Johan "MyNuts" Andersson in some of the more immature 'troll' names in esports, whilst retired Starcraft II Kim "FruitDealer" Won-gi heartwarmingly got his name from helping his mother run a Fruit Stall in Korea.

Despite the nickname stemming from KFC, Scump did admit that he hasn't eaten from the takeaway in "15 years". Maybe, it's time for the Ginja Ninja to reward himself with a Boneless Banquet after the World Championships.
