School Shooting Level Promise Causes Early Access SWAT Game To Lose Publisher

The gaming world is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to games that toe the line of questionable subject matter. Upcoming first-person shooter Six Days In Fallujah has come under fire for its portrayal of the Iraq War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 received a lot of flak from the mainstream media when it launched due to the No Russian mission, and indie twin-stick shooter Hatred puts players in the shoes of an angsty bloke murdering civilians, which didn't go over well in 2015.

Enter Ready or Not. Developed by VOID Interactive, the early access first-person shooter is described as "intense" and "tactical" on the official Steam page, where it depicts a "modern-day world in which SWAT police units are called to defuse hostile and confronting situations".

The reviews on Steam are currently on "Overwhelmingly Positive" for the week-old game, but the reception elsewhere hasn't gone down too well, as the publisher has cut all ties with the title.

Why Has Ready Or Not Lost Its Publisher?

In a now-deleted Reddit comment of which you can see a community member's reply to above, one of the developers working on the game replied to a thread entitled "Should Ready or Not have a school shooting mission in the campaign?". Prior to deletion, their comment read "You better believe it's gonna".

While there's certainly a right way to tackle controversial subject matters, just a few hours after making that comment, original publishers Team17 announced it had cut ties with VOID Interactive, which was confirmed by the developer on Twitter. It stated that it is confident "this is the right path for the future of Ready or Not, and we thank Team17 for their partnership and wish them great success with their spectrum of games".

What Has Team17 Said About The Split?

When we reached out to Team17 for comment, a PR representative stated the following:

"I’m afraid that Team17 Digital and VOID Interactive have mutually agreed that Ready or Not will no longer be published by Team17 Digital. We wish the team at VOID Interactive all the best for the future and the continued development of the game."

The statement doesn't refer to the school shooting comment specifically, but it's safe to assume it's contributed to the reason given the timing of the two statements.
