Retro gamers rejoice because a major piece of gaming is finally coming to iOS and Android. With gaming staples like Mario and Crash Bandicoot already making the leap to mobile, recent announcements have confirmed that both Apex Legends and Battlefield are taking their franchises on the move. Keen to cash in on our obsession with mobile gaming, Jagex's RuneScape has just found a new home.

First released in 2001, RuneScape was an early MMORPG that has retained its popularity for the past two decades. With over 200 million accounts created, RuneScape even has the honour of claiming the Guinness World Record for the world's largest and most-updated free MMORPG. What better way to celebrate the game's 20th anniversary than a mobile release?

When is RuneScape coming to iOS and Android?

If you're ready to journey into Gielinor like never before, RuneScape is coming to iOS and Android soon. For those who can't wait to play, pre-registration for RuneScape mobile is live now. If you pre-register for iOS and Android now, you'll also unlock some great in-game rewards.

While Old School RuneScape has been available on mobile since 2018, putting classic RuneScape on these devices is a whole different ball game. What makes RuneScape mobile most impressive is the title's fully cross-save functionality. This means you can play on PC and then quickly jump to iOS or Android to take your game on the move. As Microsoft continues to push its Xbox Cloud Gaming service and Nintendo already has this technology in place, the perk of portable gaming is becoming a must-have addition.

If that wasn't enough, RuneScape has been optimised for mobile and now boasts an updated UI for smaller screens, new icons, textures, text, and controls - all to make your mobile experience as seamless as possible.

What else do we know about RuneScape on iOS and Android?

We already know Old School RuneScape is popular on mobile and has secured 8 million installs since its release. We're expecting that to be even higher for RuneScape thanks to Jagex's marketing campaign. Making sure the release doesn't go under the radar, Jagex has a five-tier reward system. Those who pre-register can unlock a "soft punk" hairstyle, "magic leap" teleport device, "Scales" animated pet, as well as a sword and armour. The final tier reward pre-registered players with the ultra-rare Crux Egal armour and a 50% XP boost for seven days.

While RuneScape is sure to have mass-market appeal, the MMORPG genre is getting increasingly saturated on mobile. RuneScape follows in the footsteps of Genshin Impact and Black Desert offering cross-play between PC and mobile. According to Jagex, RuneScape mobile has already secured 2.1 million downloads in the past 18 months. Now that the full-fat version is ready to go, the iOS store has a potential release of June 17. Remember that Jagex has simply said the game is coming “this summer", so we'll have to wait and see.
