Rocket League Tournaments Set For Huge Overhaul

The Rocket League Tournaments are set for a huge overhaul as Psyonix look to improve the system which has had limited success.

Ahead of Rocket League going free-to-play this year, developers are looking to improve a number of functions, which includes the Tournaments. First introduced in 2019 the Tournament feature has been a welcome addition but has scarcely been used. However, with the changes proposed by Psyonix, there's much more motivation to compete against 31 other teams.

The overhaul will introduce a new ranked mode: 'Competitive Tournaments', similar to how ranked works in single matches. With rewards available for wins and progression, Competitive tournaments aim to attract ranked players to compete in teams against each other. Unlike the unorthodox Swiss-format which we see used in the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) Season X, the tournaments are a straight knockout with a maximum of five games.

Each of the first three rounds will be a single match elimination game, with the semi-finals and final being a best of three. Players who lose in the first round will be granted access to the losers bracket to continue the competition against the other 15 sides that lost, helping with the skill-gap.

Competitive Tournaments will be 3v3, and can be filled by full teams or solo queues. Based upon your skill, you will receive a Tournaments rank which works in the same way as ranked play, and your initial ranking will work off your 3v3 rank the competitive Standard playlist.

For example, if you're a Diamond 2 on Standard on the competitive playlist, you will be matched against players of a similar ability.

As for rewards, you will receive Tournament Credits, which will increase the further along in a tournament you get. These credits can be redeemed for 'Cups' which can grant you customisation items including wheels, decals and goal explosions. With more Cups, you can unlock items of a higher rarity, including exotic items which can be traded on the Black Market. You will also be rewarded with a title if you win a Tournament.

A date for the update has yet to be determined, but Psyonix is looking to implement all their recent changes 'this summer'.
