The regionals are done, the teams are ready, and the Fall Majors are set to begin. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the first Major of Season X is taking place online, with each of the four RLCS regions having their own event. The first of those is kicking off today, with Oceania’s top sixteen battling it out for their share of the $25,000 prize pool and invaluable RLCS X points to help their bids for one of the region’s two World Championship spots.

Key information:

When:

  • October 10-11
  • Streams start at 1.00am BST | 11.00am AEDT

Where:

Format:

  • 16-team Swiss bracket into 8-team single elimination bracket

Key storylines:

Undoubtedly the biggest storyline heading into this weekend is the ongoing battle between Oceania’s top three teams. Cringe Society, Renegades, and Ground Zero Gaming have all taken one of the three regionals, with the latter having taken the final event last week. Ground Zero are looking to retain their Regional Championship crown after taking home the title last season, but Renegades and Cringe Society’s rosters are both stacked with seasoned veterans who know exactly what it takes to win under pressure. Torsos, Drippay, and Kamii (spread across those two sides) achieved OCE’s furthest LAN run ever when they came fourth-place at the Season 6 World Championship, but since then the region as a whole has struggled.

Oceania is seen by many as being a top-heavy region, and the results certainly show that, across three events, only ten teams have made it to the final eight spots, with Gaming Gamers, Mindfreak, and Vort Central joining the three giants in having made it to top eight in all three events. Those three sides, despite making up spots 4-6 on the Regional leaderboard, are yet to take even a single victory against Cringe Society, Renegades, or Ground Zero after a huge number of defeats. Is this the point at which OCE’s dominant sides are taken down?

Predictions:

  • 1st: Ground Zero Gaming - their late-split form will carry over to the Major and secure them a huge victory
  • 2nd: Cringe Society - another grand final appearance for the veterans
  • 3rd-4th: Renegades / Mindfreak - Renegades have continued their run in the top three and Mindfreak are (aside from Gaming Gamers) the only team outside of the top three to have reached the semifinals twice

The action kicks off at 9.30am AEDT tomorrow (October 10), with the first round taking place off-stream before the two broadcasts capture the rest of the action. Stay tuned to GGRecon for more RLCS X news and content.
