The shuffling corpse that is Capcom's Resident Evil series is clawing its way back into our lives in a big way. Off the back of Resident Evil Village's gothic delights, fans on the long-running shooter have the treat of a live-action reboot movie and unrelated Netflix animation.

While we wait for the star-studded Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City to start the story from scratch (again), players can make the most of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness tying directly into the canon of the games. Taking place between the events of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, series favourites Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy are back in action.

With an attack on the White House, a trip to China, and covert operations with bioweapons, it's all pretty standard Resi fodder. If you can't wait for the limited series' release, Netflix has dropped the opening minutes early.

What happens in Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness opening scene?

In the opening clip, we get our first real sense of the Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness story. It opens in October 2000, as a team flies into the war-torn backdrop of Penamstan. A military group known as the Mad Dogs try to help special forces comrades who've had their helicopter shot down. Disobeying orders from above, the Mad Dogs go to help the soldiers, only to find they've stumbled across a grim scene of slaughter.

Like any good Resident Evil outing, there's a zombie twist to the tale, with the downed crew presumably about to be infected with some sort of Umbrella virus. You'll have to wait and see how this connects to the overarching story of the White House, but the main trailer shows Mad Dogs' leader, Jason, suffering from PTSD.

Six years later, Jason and Leon are sent to the White House to uncover a mole that's been leaking sensitive files, however, things take a turn when it's overrun by the undead. Reunited with old friend President Graham, it's a race against the clock to keep the POTUS alive. Elsewhere, Claire's journey to Penamstan leads to the grisly discovery of BOWs. Finally, there's hacker Shen Mei - who joins Leon and Jason in tracking down the source of the White House leak to the Institute of Biological Sciences in Shanghai.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness release date

Thankfully, there isn't long to wait until we'll be munching brains away from Racoon City. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is due to hit Netflix on July 8.

Importantly, the series has some serious talent from the franchise's acclaimed past. Eiichiro Hasumi is the show's director, with Infinite Darkness keeping the realistic CGI animation we've seen in modern iterations of the games. Better yet, Nick Apostolides and Stephanie Panisello reprise their respective roles as Leon and Claire from the game, meaning there's a sense of familiarity here.

Considering the dynamic duo have been firm favourites since their introduction in 1998's Resident Evil 2, it's great to see Claire and Leon back in action. It's a huge year for Resident Evil, and with Capcom celebrating 25 years, the announcements and crossovers don't stop here. As well as collaborations with Dead By Daylight and Rainbow Six Siege, Netflix is apparently working on a live-action Resident Evil series. The fun (and flesh) never stops.
