Red Dead Online Player Spots Back To The Future Easter Egg
Controllers, where we're going, we don't need controllers. While the world of video games is packed with Easter eggs and nods to pop culture, one Red Dead Online player has potentially spotted one of our favourites yet. When it comes to movie trilogies, the likes of the original Star Wars saga, The Godfather, and Back to the Future are up there as the best of the best. Sadly, while Star Wars has continued taking us to that galaxy far, far away, Back to the Future has failed to hit 88mph since the release of Back to the Future Part III in 1990.
Although Part III is held as the black sheep of the family by some, it still has a beloved place in the hearts of many and broke with the norms established by the first two movies. Instead of visiting the Hill Valley of the bopping 1955 or the futuristic 2015, Robert Zemeckis delivered a gunslinging Western set largely in 1885. There was also the Back to the Future Part III game released in 1991, but jump forward to 2021 and someone could've just unearthed a well-hidden Easter egg buried in them thar hills.
What is the Back to the Future Easter egg in Red Dead Online?
Posting on Reddit, one redditor (with a NSFW name) had us shouting, "Great Scott". They shared a post titled "Deleted scene from Back to the Future 3", as they rumbled into Valentine on horseback. In the blink of an eye, a carriage appeared from nowhere and roared off down the street with a trail of flames behind it. For those who've watched the BttF movies, you'll know that's the signature moves of the time-travelling DeLorean. Unfortunately, before we could see what's going on inside the carriage and whether there's a Red Dead version of Doc Brown inside, the vehicle had turned the corner and was gone.
In response to the clip going viral, other fans of the franchise couldn't contain their excitement. One fan wrote, "Haha this is some space x sh*t", while another said, "Holy sh*t. Good one". Namely, players shared their disappointment that this was probably an accidental inclusion rather than an actual Back to the Future Easter egg put in by Rockstar.
Still, the clip sparked the idea of other Easter eggs that should be implemented. One player suggested, "Rockstar is really missing on a huge easter egg/mission opportunity to find a deluxo with a body Avon Hertz inside in some mine in New Austin and trying to send it back to the future by using train tracks. I would even pay for this DLC". Is this the end of potential BttF crossovers though? Someone claimed, "Actually i've heard an npc say: 'great scott' in Doc-like manner multiple times. I think this happens in rhodes or valentine when riding fast in town with weapon drawn". Who knows, maybe Doc Brown and Marty really are out there in the Old West?
Are there more Easter eggs in Red Dead Online?
As with any modern video game, Red Dead Online is packed to the rafters with Easter eggs. Even if the Back to the Future one isn't intentional, there are plenty in there that are. If you look hard enough, you might be able to spot a reference to Clint Eastwood's The Man With No Name on a gravestone in Armadillo, the start of construction on Mount Rushmore, and even a hark back to the very start of the Red Dead series with what looks like the house where Red Harlow's parents were killed in during Red Dead Revolver.
In general, Rockstar's Red Dead games have been praised as a goldmine of Easter egg. GTA V's Michael appears in RDRII, there's a reference to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure with The Strange Things Are Afoot achievement, a Lord of the Rings-inspired Hobbit House, and John Marston referencing Aliens when he shouts "Game Over, man! Game Over!" if charged by an animal while reloading. The above is all well and good, but if there's ever a Red Dead Redemption III, we demand a Back to the Future/GTA DLC where you drive around the desert in a time-travelling Deluxo.
