Get ready for a trippy tale for the ages, as fans are poised to play Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The latest entry in Insomniac Games' long-running adventure series is the direct sequel to 2016's Ratchet & Clank reboot, however, it looks like there will be nods to the wider Ratchetverse - and even other gaming giants.

These days, developers like Naughty Dog have become masters of Easter eggs and ties to other franchises. Keen not to be outdone, Insomniac has included a crossover gun that will bring Rift Apart tearing into a different dimension. More than just including the odd tie to Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man or Sunset Overdrive, its influence is being felt in a number of other fan-favourite franchises.

What is the Ratchet and Clank crossover gun?

In a new teaser trailer, Insomniac showed off the baffling barrage of crossovers that are coming out way. During the footage, there's a clear crossover with the upcoming release of Horizon Forbidden West - with a Thunderjaw falling from the sky. Elsewhere, Nathan Drake's jeep from the Uncharted series crashes onto the map, while Sunset Overdrive's Fizzie also pops by for a chat.

The RYNO 8 gun pulls items from other games into Rift Apart's world by creating a dimension portal. From what we've seen of Rift Apart so far, gameplay is interrupted by Ratchet being transported into pocket dimensions. Over the history of Ratchet & Clank, the RYNO (Rip Ya a New One) has always been considered the most powerful gun in your arsenal. It can be bought for a massive amount of bolts or found in hard-to-reach areas, with each game giving the gun a different update.

The RYNO 8 looks like a powerful piece of kit when it comes to Rift Apart, but it remains to be seen how the logistics of pulling items and characters from other games will work. Although it would be great to take out Doctor Nefarious' goons with Aloy's bow and arrow, we're guessing the RYNO 8's crossover capabilities might be limited to Easter eggs.

What does the Ratchet and Clank crossover gun mean?

The reason the title of this article doesn't say "crossover with other PlayStation exclusives", is because Sunset Overdrive is typically an Xbox exclusive. Interestingly, the Ratchet & Clank crossover gun comes off the back of rumours that Sunset Overdrive remake could be coming to PS5.

In terms of crossover capabilities, fans have championed Insomniac to include a dimension hop over to the world of Jak and Dexter and persuade Naughty Dog to release another game. Elsewhere, Grand Theft AutoGod of War, and the aforementioned Marvel's Spider-Man mean the possibilities are endless.

At the time of writing, Insomniac has only revealed four crossovers (with Sucker Punch's Sly Cooper also appearing), however, with the Rift Apart embargo about to lift, there are sure to be some more waiting in the wings. Let the multiverse of mayhem continue.
