Somewhere over the Rainbow Six Siege.

Ubisoft has a surprise for Rainbow Six Siege fans and is luring us all back with a limited-time event based on the MUTE Protocol. Putting a futuristic twist on Secure Area, things are looking a little bit Cyberpunk 2077 in Rainbow Six at the moment.

Designers have got out their neon paint brushes and splashed it all over the game. Be warned, if you've got a headache or have an aversion to bright colours, you might want to sit this one out.

Posting on Twitter, the official Rainbow Six Siege account shared news of the MUTE Protocol. A glossy promo video showed off what players can expect, and while no one saw this one coming (before it was leaked), it's a welcome surprise.

The Rainbow Six Siege MUTE Protocol officially kicks off today (August 4) and will run through to August 17 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Secure Area mode and the Tower map have been dragged into the far future, and we've got to admit, both look all the better for it.

There's a brand new gameplay feature called Morphing. Here, players can easily hop between Operator and Drone forms by simply entering or exiting Observation Tools. Defenders can also  teleport using bulletproof cameras. Given that you seem to go invisible when teleporting, this a surefire way to launch a sneak attack on unsuspecting enemies.

New sci-fi cosmetics will be released for the likes of Oryx and Mute, however, there are a number of Operators who won't be part of MUTE Protocol. Due to the way their gadgets could affect gameplay, Twitch, Thatcher, Mozzie, Mute, Maestro, Valkyrie, Dokkaebi, Echo, Goyo, Clash, Montagne, Blitz, and Caveira won't be playable. Finally, there's an exclusive weapon skin, while cosmetics can be earned with a special event challenge or bought with R6 credits of Renown.

Although the MUTE Protocol was leaked ahead of time - meaning players could explore the mode before they were meant to - it was far from the finished product we see today. Either way, expect the MUTE Protocol to be a popular limited-time event in Rainbow Six Siege that will let everyone flex their muscles in the far-off future
