Raheem Sterling Pays Tribute To Late Twitch Streamer Steffie Gregg
During their 4-0 hammering of Hungary in the World Cup Qualifiers, English footballer and role model Raheem Sterling dedicated his goal to the late Steffie Gregg, a Twitch Streamer who recently lost her life due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sterling, whose touching tribute was somewhat overshadowed by racist abuse hurtled his way from Hungarian supporters, revealed a message on a shirt underneath that read: "Love you forever Steffie Gregg".
Steffie Gregg recently passed away due to coronavirus and has received multiple tributes from prominent Jamaicans, having been located in the country for a large part of her life. Sterling, who is of Jamaican descent and often travels to the country in his brief holidays, took to Twitter after the game to say "That one was for SVG".
During her lifetime, Steffie Gregg amassed 38,000 followers on Instagram and often appeared on Twitch playing battle royale titles like Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite. Her Twitch profile has been cleared, however, many of her highlights have been gathered on her gaming-dedicated Instagram page - with her last upload of a Warzone Precision Airstrike double kill getting over 18,000 views.
The streamer and Sterling appeared to have been friends for many years, as seen by her upload in 2018 where she's sporting a Manchester City kit with his name on inside the Etihad Arena.
Unfortunately, family relation "Rvssian" took to Instagram to inform people of Steffie's passing. In a heartfelt post, he said: "I feel helpless 💔 my little Steffie. I feel I failed you and couldn’t protect you from this... COVID is REAL."
Despite the touching tribute, Sterling was subjected to racist chants and gestures from Hungarian fans following his goal in England's win.
Having scored the opening goal of the game, Sterling celebrated in the corner, where the opposing fans launched bottles and plastic cups at the 26-year-old. According to reports from BBC and Sky, "sporadic monkey chants from various areas of the crowd" were targetted at the footballer, alongside 18-year-old substitute Jude Bellingham.
Sterling avoided any mention of the controversies though, choosing to honour the goal the Steffie.
Rest in peace, Steffie Gregg.
