While some of you are likely still struggling to find a PlayStation 5, that hasn't stopped Sony from looking ahead to what comes after.

The PS5 has been on an astronomical journey since its first went on sale in 2020, and even though it's been plagued by stocking issues, it's been obliterating the Xbox Series in the sales department.

Sony is currently sitting pretty thanks to the PS5 being the best-selling console of 2022 (so far), and although we didn't need reminding, the PS6 is presumably on the way.

What year did Sony mention for the PS6 release?

Despite the PS5 being two years old, it still feels like a relative baby in the console world. Now though, we've got confirmation a PS6 is on the way.

The PS6 release date was seemingly revealed in court documents from the ongoing legal row between Microsoft and Sony. If you haven't been keeping up, these gaming giants have locked horns over Microsoft's potential acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As spotted by industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls, Sony has already sketched out when we could see the PS6. By the looks of it, 2028 could be one to mark in the diary.

"Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision's games available on PlayStation only until 2027," says Sony. "Likewise, in public comments just on October 26, Microsoft said that it plans to offer Call of Duty on PlayStation only as long as it makes sense."

"A period until 2027--or some other (possibly shorter) time that Microsoft unilaterally determines makes sense to Microsoft is badly inadequate. By the time that SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around REDACTED), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness."

Is Sony Really Working On The PS6?

This seemingly throwaway comment confirms Sony is at least planning the PS5's successor. We don't know how far along it is with these plans or when the next new-gen console could go into production, but six years is quite some way out.

It's wild to think what the gaming landscape will look like in 2028, however, we expect the battle lines between Microsoft and Sony to have become even bloodier. We also imagine Nintendo will continue doing its own thing elsewhere.

There were six years between the original PlayStation and the PS2, while there was the same difference between the PS2 and PS3. Eight years between the PS5 and PS6 is a lengthier wait, but all of that could change.

In the meantime, there are continued rumours of a PS5 Pro, PS5 Slim, or both to keep us ticking over until the PS6's eventual release. Well, better start saving.
